When COVID-19 vaccines were implemented, nursing home residents (NHRs) and staff (NHS) in Belgium were prioritized for vaccination. To characterize the vaccine response over time in this population and to identify poorly responding groups, we assessed antibody concentrations two (T1), four (T2) and six months (T3) after primary course BNT162b2 vaccination in six groups of infection-naive/infection-primed NHRs/NHS, with/without comorbidity (NHRs only). Participant groups (N = 125 per group) were defined within a national serosurveillance study in nursing homes, based on questionnaire data.

The Merovingian period (5th to 8th cc AD) was a time of demographic, socioeconomic, cultural, and political realignment in Western Europe. Here, we report the whole-genome shotgun sequence data of 30 human skeletal remains from a coastal Late Merovingian site of Koksijde (675 to 750 AD), alongside 18 remains from two Early to Late Medieval sites in present-day Flanders, Belgium. We find two distinct ancestries, one shared with Early Medieval England and the Netherlands, while the other, minor component, reflecting likely continental Gaulish ancestry.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) parameters affect kidney transplant outcomes in children, highlighting a lack of information in this area.
  • Data was collected from 1210 pediatric patients across Europe, analyzing the impact of parathyroid hormone, calcium, phosphate, and vitamin D levels on kidney function over 5 years post-transplant.
  • The findings indicate that hyperparathyroidism may independently increase the risk of kidney transplant dysfunction, while hyperphosphatemia's impact appears related to declines in kidney function rather than being an independent factor.

Background: Nursing home residents (NHR) and staff have been disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and were therefore prioritised in the COVID-19 vaccination strategy. However, frail older adults, like NHR, are known to have decreased antibody responses upon vaccination targeting other viral antigens.

Objectives: As real-world data on vaccine responsiveness, we assessed the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among Belgian NHR and staff during the primary COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

Article Synopsis
  • - The SCOPE study tracked SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Belgian nursing home residents and staff following their COVID-19 vaccination, analyzing data from 1,554 residents and 1,082 staff across 69 nursing homes.
  • - Initial seroprevalence was very high at two months post-vaccination (91% for residents, 99% for staff), but it decreased significantly by six months (68% for residents, 89% for staff).
  • - The decrease in antibody levels was more pronounced among infection-naive and older residents, highlighting the importance of ongoing monitoring for this vulnerable population to ensure effective protection against COVID-19.

Objectives: Nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) plays a well-established role in differentiating primary from secondary RP due to SSc. However, the association of NVC with novel severe organ involvement/progression in SSc has never been evaluated in a multicentre, multinational study, which we now perform for the first time.

Methods: Follow-up data from 334 SSc patients [265 women; 18 limited SSc (lSSc)/203 lcSSc/113 dcSSc] registered between November 2008 and January 2016 by seven tertiary centres in the EUSTAR-database, were analysed.
