Chronic mountain sickness is a maladaptive syndrome that affects individuals living permanently at high altitude and is characterized primarily by excessive erythrocytosis (EE). Recent results concerning the impact of EE in Andean highlanders on clotting and the possible promotion of hypercoagulability, which can lead to thrombosis, were contradictory. We assessed the coagulation profiles of Andeans highlanders with and without excessive erythrocytosis (EE+ and EE-).

Expedition 5300: limits of human adaptations in the highest city in the world.

Exposure to chronic hypobaric hypoxia imposes a significant physiological burden to more than 80 million humans living above 2500 m throughout the world. Among them, 50 000 live in the world's highest city, La Rinconada, located at 5000-5300 m in southern Peru. Expedition 5300 is the first scientific and medical programme led in La Rinconada to investigate the physiological adaptations and altitude-related health issues in this unique population.

Two family outbreaks of botulism (a total of nine cases) were identified in south-east and northern France in early September 2011. The source of infection was considered to be a ground green olive paste. Botulinum type A toxin was identified in seven cases and in the incriminated olive paste.

Objective: Megestrol acetate oral suspension (MAOS) is an appetite stimulant indicated for cachexia in patients with AIDS. It is available in its original formulation, Megace (MAOS), and as a nanocrystal dispersion, Megace ES (MA-ES). Three studies were conducted to evaluate the pharmacokinetic properties of these formulations under fed and fasting conditions.

Use of brain imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) in first-episode psychosis: review and retrospective study.

Objective: To identify and review available evidence on the diagnostic yield of brain computed tomographies (CTs) and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) in first-episode psychosis, and examine yield in our own institution (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec).

Method: Using MEDLINE (1966 to October 2007) and EMBASE (1980 to October 2007), we identified and analyzed studies that examined imaging yields in first-episode psychosis; yield being defined as the percentage of scans showing abnormalities that may result in psychosis. We also retrospectively analyzed diagnostic yields in 46 patients hospitalized in our institution between 2001 and 2006 for first-episode psychosis.

Rat hepatonuclear factor PS-1 regulates tissue-specific activity of the S14 promoter in vitro.

We have previously identified a rat hepatonuclear factor, PS-1 that binds to the thyroid hormone responsive gene, S14. To determine whether PS-1 is involved in regulating tissue-specific expression of the S14 gene, we have correlated the DNA binding activity of PS-1 with mRNA-S14 expression in a variety of tissues. Gel retardation analysis revealed a pattern of binding to the recognition site that was characteristic of tissues with high levels of mRNA-S14, a different pattern was found in tissues which do not express the gene.
