Teledermatology Utilization and Integration in Residency Training Over the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: During the 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Division of Dermatology, University of Ottawa, adapted pre-existing local healthcare infrastructures to provide increased provider-to-provider teledermatology services as well as integrated teledermatology into the dermatology residency training program.

Objectives: (1) To assess the differences in utilization of provider-to-provider teledermatology services before and during the COVID-19 pandemic; and (2) to assess dermatology resident and faculty experiences with the integration of teledermatology into dermatology residency training at the University of Ottawa.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis comparing provider-to-provider teledermatology consults submitted to dermatologists from April 2019 to October 2019 pre-pandemic with the same period during the pandemic in 2020.

Anti-saccades predict cognitive functions in older adults and patients with Parkinson's disease.

A major component of cognitive control is the ability to act flexibly in the environment by either behaving automatically or inhibiting an automatic behaviour. The interleaved pro/anti-saccade task measures cognitive control because the task relies on one's abilities to switch flexibly between pro and anti-saccades, and inhibit automatic saccades during anti-saccade trials. Decline in cognitive control occurs during aging or neurological illnesses such as Parkinson's disease (PD), and indicates decline in other cognitive abilities, such as memory.

The association between question type and the outcomes of a Dermatology eConsult service.

Background: eConsult is a web based service that facilitates communication between primary care providers (PCPs) and specialists, which can reduce the need for face-to-face consultations with specialists. One example is the Champlain BASE (Building Access to Specialist through eConsultation) service with dermatology being the largest specialty consulted.

Methods: Dermatology eConsults submitted from July 2011 to January 2015 were reviewed.

Teaching dermatology to Canadian undergraduate medical students.

Background: The Canadian dermatology undergraduate curriculum was reviewed in 1983, 1987, and 1996. All surveys revealed the limited amount of time dedicated to dermatology in the undergraduate curriculum.

Objective: This survey was designed to obtain current information regarding undergraduate dermatology teaching in Canadian medical schools.

Cost comparison of psoriasis treatments.

Background: Knowledge of the cost of various psoriasis therapeutic options is essential to the prescribing clinician.

Objective: To compare the cost of various psoriasis treatments over a 10-year period in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Methods: We used a hypothetical patient with plaque-type psoriasis of moderate severity with a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index of 10, body surface area of 20%, and no joint involvement.

Treatment of vitiligo with narrow-band ultraviolet B: advantages and disadvantages.

Background: Narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) therapy for vitiligo is increasingly used in patients who are unresponsive to other forms of therapy.

Objective: This study measures levels of patient and physician satisfaction and the associated advantages and disadvantages of NB-UVB.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted of the first 50 patients with vitiligo treated at the Photoderm Clinic in Ottawa, Ontario.

Are narrow-band ultraviolet B home units a viable option for continuous or maintenance therapy of photoresponsive diseases?

Background: Phototherapy is an effective treatment for several photoresponsive diseases. Many patients are unable to attend hospital-based treatment and prefer home phototherapy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to survey patients who were prescribed home phototherapy to determine the viability of narrow-band ultraviolet B home units in the continuous or maintenance treatment of photoresponsive diseases.

Excipients in topical corticosteroid preparations in Canada.

Topical corticosteroids are widely used for the treatment of dermatoses in Canada. The effects of the various nontherapeutic components of these formulations are less well known than those of the active ingredients and may cause adverse reactions. Information on the components is fragmentary and is scattered throughout the literature.

A computerized database-management system for curriculum analysis.

This report describes a computerized database-management system designed to allow users to retrieve and report information on the curriculum of an undergraduate pathophysiology course. With the system the user can locate where and in what context a topic is covered in the course and can answer queries and prepare reports concerning, for example, format and duration of sessions, teaching aids used and instructors. The system is a unique tool that can be used to optimize course structure and content.

Gas plant (Dictamnus albus) phytophotodermatitis simulating poison ivy.

A 48-year-old man presented with an itchy rash that resembled superficial burns or cane marks on his left forearm; similar lesions had appeared every summer for 5 years. Poison ivy dermatitis had been the initial diagnosis, but the patient knew that this plant was absent from his well tended garden. A visit to the garden revealed the gas plant Dictamnus albus, and occlusive patch testing with leaf cuttings produced a reaction after the skin was exposed to sunlight.

Frequency of HLA antigens in patients with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.

A study of 138 patients with psoriasis--74 with psoriasis alone and 64 with psoriatic arthritis--revealed a significantly increased frequency of the HLA antigens A1, A28, B13, DR7 and MT3 in those with psoriasis alone and of Bw39 in those with psoriatic arthritis. The frequency of B17 was higher in both patient groups than in a control group of healthy individuals. The frequency of DRw6 was slightly higher in the patients with psoriasis alone (17.

Ambulatory Goeckerman treatment of psoriasis: experience with 200 patients.

At a psoriasis day care centre 200 patients were treated with an ambulatory Goeckerman regimen, 25 of them twice, because of recurrence. This treatment consists of the application of a coal tar preparation at home at bedtime, followed the next day by exposure to high-intensity short wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UVB) at the centre. Treatment was given 5 days a week for 1 month.

The importance of patient selection for photochemotherapy in psoriasis.

Twenty-four patients with psoriasis were treated with orally administered 8-methoxypsoralen followed by exposure to high-intensity long-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (PUVA) at a psoriasis day care centre. Among the 20 with plaque type psoriasis the condition cleared in 13 (65%), after a mean of 20.7 treatment sessions, and improved but failed to clear in 4 (20%); the treatment failed in the other 3 (15%).

Dermatologic problems in amputees.

Improvements in surgical techniques and prosthetic devices and the establishment of prosthetic clinics have altered the outlook for the amputee. A cooperative effect on the part of professionals looking after amputee patients, as carried out in these clinics, offers the best means of recognition and treatment of difficulties as they arise. Until the "bionic man" becomes a reality, amputees will continue to have skin problems.

Pellagra.

Pellagra due to malnutrition occurred in an Ottawa women in 1973. She was given a normal diet with supplements of riboflavin, thiamine, niacin and ascorbic acid. The clinical response was striking.
