Background: Endoscopy is considered the third highest generator of waste within healthcare. This is of public importance as approximately 18 million endoscopy procedures are performed yearly in the USA and 2 million in France. However, a precise measure of the carbon footprint of gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE) is lacking.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA recent multicentre collaborative study showed higher estimates of ReFacto potency when assayed with ReFacto Laboratory Standard(TM) (RLS) in comparison when standards consisting of full-length factor VIII (FVIII) were used. The RLS was hence recalibrated, leading to a 20% increase in the amount of ReFacto per vial without change in the labelled potency. The primary objective of this study was to determine the incremental and in vivo recovery of the recalibrated ReFacto in patients with severe haemophilia A.

Objectives: We performed a randomized, double-blind study to compare the efficacy and safety of nadroparin 2850 IU (0.3 mL) and enoxaparin 4000 IU (40 mg) in the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after colorectal surgery for cancer.
Some pharmacokinetic parameters of selamectin were determined in male (n = 5) and female (n = 5) Beagle dogs following a topical application at a dose rate of 6 mg/kg. The plasma concentration versus time data for the drug were analysed using a one-compartment model. The maximum plasma concentrations of 12.

In contrast, only a few patients have been reported with HIT following low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) therapy (LMW-HIT). To define the clinical and biological characteristics of LMW-HIT, 180 patients treated for suspected HIT at 15 French centres were investigated.

They include preoperative coagulation disorders related to the liver disease and haemostatic changes related to the procedure itself. They commonly lead to increased intraoperative bleeding, especially due to increased fibrinolysis, the contribution of which can be demonstrated by the relative efficacy of antifibrinolytics.

Plasmas containing an LA (n = 56) or displaying various confounding pathologies [58 intrinsic pathway factor deficiencies, 9 factor VIII inhibitors, 28 plasmas from patients treated with an oral anticoagulant (OAC)] were selected. In a first step, the efficiency of each assay and reagent was assessed using the Receiving Operating Characteristic (ROC) method.

It was shown that the amount of IgG bound to VIII was elevated in patients with an inhibitor although a weak correlation could be established between the inhibitor titre (BU) and the amount of bound IgG. In all haemophiliacs without inhibitor, IgG bound to F VIII were present.

In this report, we describe the case of a patient having a IIA vWD phenotype associated with an intermittent thrombocytopenia atypical in this subtype but observed in type IIB vWD. The patient plasma vWF showed an absence of high molecular weight and intermediate multimers and had a decreased binding capacity to GPIb.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA retrospective analysis by 34 surgical teams from 1981 to 1990 revealed 15 cases of deep vein thrombosis of the lower limb and one pulmonary embolism in children aged 16 or less. The various prophylactic methods used by the different teams led us to undertake a prospective study the aim of which was to determine the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in teenager rachis surgery. The purpose of our study was to recognize congenital or acquired factors predisposing to thrombosis and to detect without delay any deep vein thrombosis by ultrasound examination and doppler study.

Eighteen patients with an acute thrombosis of the splanchnic veins were reviewed. Most of apparently idiopathic cases of splanchnic vein thrombosis are related to an increased coagulation related to a congenital or acquired defect of haemostasis. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a new and effective treatment.

As GPIb is a major receptor for von Willebrand factor (vWF) in platelet adhesion, we have now examined the consequences of thrombin activation on the organization of vWF bound to GPIb on the platelet surface. Studies were performed using monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies in either immunogold staining and electron microscopy (Au-EM) or in flow cytometry.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFvon Willebrand disease (vWD) type IIB is characterized by an increased reactivity of von Willebrand factor (vWF) with platelets and a lack of large multimers. Exon 28 of the vWF gene encodes for functional domains involved in the binding of vWF to GPIb, and it is presumed that the defects in type IIB vWD lie within or adjacent to these functional domains. We screened overlapping DNA fragments generated by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that spanned the 1,379 bp of exon 28 of a type IIB vWD patient using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE).

These deficiencies were recognized in the course of investigations for deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in the eight patients. A group of 31 individuals (patients and family members), mostly less than 40-year-old was explored.

This retrospective study was undertaken to assess the place and efficacy of ultrasonography, and ultrasound-guided biopsy in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in a series of 34 patients. The sonographic signs were not specific, as tumor patterns were very different from one case to another; there were no pathognomonic signs of hepatocellular carcinoma in comparison with hepatic metastases. Tissue characterization of the liver abnormalities was obtained by percutaneous ultrasound-guided biopsies.
