Article Synopsis
  • Embryo transfer (ET) is being tested in horses to enhance genetic improvement and the study focuses on improving ET success by re-flushing and re-transferring embryos from contaminated to healthy recipient mares.
  • The research involved 25 recipient mares, examining the effectiveness of embryo transfer, with 7 serving as a control group and 18 undergoing treatment to check for infections before transferring embryos.
  • Results showed high rates of endometritis in control mares, leading to embryonic death, while treated mares had a better pregnancy rate, especially in embryos with well-developed capsules, highlighting the importance of monitoring and addressing uterine health.

Introduction And Objectives: Fatty liver disease is a multisystem disease. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a more accurate indicator of chronic kidney disease (CKD) than nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the relationship between recently defined metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and CKD is currently unclear.

Background: We recently developed a simple novel index called fibrosis 6 (FIB-6) using machine learning data analysis. We aimed to evaluate its performance in the diagnosis of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Methods: A retrospective observational analysis of data was obtained from seven countries (Egypt, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Turkey, Greece, Oman, Qatar, and Jordan) of CHB patients.

Background: Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is one of most aggressive renal cell carcinomas and novel therapeutic strategies are therefore needed. Recent comprehensive molecular and immune profiling of RMC tissues revealed a highly inflamed phenotype, suggesting the potential therapeutic role for immune checkpoint therapies. We present the first prospective evaluation of an immune checkpoint inhibitor in a cohort of patients with RMC.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a promising biomarker and play a vital role in cell-cell communication. This study aimed (I) to identify and characterize EVs from low volume uterine lavage (LVL) and serum in mares with endometritis, compared to healthy controls and (II) to measure serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), and prostaglandins (PGF and PGE). Mares were divided into 30 sub-fertile (endometritis) and 20 fertile (controls).

Heart failure with recovered ejection fraction (HFrecEF) involves those who have previously had reduced cardiac function that has subsequently improved. However, there is not a single definition of this phenomenon and recovery of cardiac function in terms of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) itself does not necessarily correlate with remission from the detrimental physiology of heart failure (HF) and its consequences. There is also the question of the utility of defibrillators in these patients, and whether they should be replaced at the time of battery depletion.

Background: There is little insight into which patients can be weaned off right ventricular (RV) acute mechanical circulatory support (AMCS) after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. We hypothesize that concomitant RV AMCS insertion instead of postoperative implantation will improve 1-year survival and increase the likelihood of RV AMCS weaning.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective database of 826 consecutive patients who received a HeartMate II or HVAD between January 2007 and December 2016 was analyzed.

Background: Non-invasive tests (NITs), such as Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) and the aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), developed using classical statistical methods, are increasingly used for determining liver fibrosis stages and recommended in treatment guidelines replacing the liver biopsy. Application of conventional cutoffs of FIB-4 and APRI resulted in high rates of misclassification of fibrosis stages.

Aim: There is an unmet need for more accurate NITs that can overcome the limitations of FIB-4 and APRI.

So far the intimate link between serum microRNA (miRNA) and uterine inflammation in mares is unknown. We aimed (I) to investigate expression profile of eca-miR-155, eca-miR-223, eca-miR-17, eca-miR-200a, and eca-miR-205 (II) and to measure concentrations of interleukin 6 (IL-6), and prostaglandins (PGF and PGE) in serum of mares with healthy and abnormal uterine status (endometritis). This study was conducted on 80 Arabian mares: young (4-7 years), and old (8-14 years).

Aims: Prediction of right heart failure (RHF) after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implant remains a challenge. The EUROMACS right-sided heart failure (EUROMACS-RHF) risk score was proposed as a prediction tool for post-LVAD RHF but lacks from large external validation. The aim of our study was to externally validate the score.

Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has detrimental effects on patient and graft survival after kidney transplantation. In the pre-direct-acting antiviral (DAA) era, treatment of HCV infection was associated with low response rates, poor tolerance, and increased risk of allograft rejection. However, DAAs have revolutionized HCV treatment.

With the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction is a global health problem, especially because it is one of the earliest consequences of obesity and it precedes diabetes development. Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction is of particular concern in the Middle East and north Africa, where its prevalence is greater than that in the rest of the world. Despite the magnitude of the problem, no regional guidelines have been developed to address this disease.

Background: Venous congestion in heart failure (HF) may lead to worsening renal failure (WRF). We hypothesised that WRF in patients hospitalised for left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is associated with increased 1-year mortality. There is limited data regarding WRF in HF patients with mechanical support.

Since the development and approval of new direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs, chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is now considered a curable disease. However, the emphasis on DAA therapies might disregard other preventive measures, and limits the strategy for a clinical cure rather than comprehensive disease control. The Qatar National plan for HCV control was launched in December 2014 to prioritize and proactively manage HCV with the ultimate aim of eliminating viral hepatitis.

: Expatriates represent >80% of Qatar's population, mostly arriving from countries in Africa and Asia that are endemic with many diseases. This increases the risk for introducing new pathogens into the country and provides a platform for maintenance of endemic pathogen circulation. Here, we report on the incidence and epidemiological characteristics of hepatitis B in Qatar between 2010 and 2014.
