Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) is one of the most vital root vegetable crops worldwide. Cadmium (Cd), a non-essential and toxic heavy metal, can dramatically restrict radish taproot quality and safety.
The edible mushroom industry makes a lot of leftover material called spent mushroom substrate (SMS), and we need to find good ways to use it.
Protaetia brevitarsis larvae (PBL) can eat this leftover material and turn it into useful organic fertilizer and insect protein.
The study found that PBL can successfully eat different types of SMS from mushrooms and create fertilizer that's safe and rich in nutrients, showing a new way to use waste from woodchip-based mushroom farming.
