Methylprednisolone, dexamethasone or hydrocortisone for acute severe pediatric asthma: does it matter?

Objective: Various intravenous (IV) corticosteroids are available for acute severe asthma (ASA) treatment. The choice of IV corticosteroids varies broadly and depends on institution, country, or physician preferences. In this study, we compared the efficacy of IV methylprednisolone, hydrocortisone and dexamethasone in ASA treatment during pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission.

New Antimicrobial Agents for the Treatment of Staphylococcal Infections in Children.

Several new antimicrobial agents-daptomycin, ceftaroline, telavancin, dalbavancin, and-tedizolid have been approved for the treatment of staphylococcal infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), in adults. Ceftaroline and daptomycin have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in children. Ceftaroline, a beta-lactam antibiotic with activity against MRSA, has been approved for treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia and complicated skin and skin structure infections.

Medical management with diazepam for electrical status epilepticus during slow wave sleep in children.

Objective: Oral diazepam, administered in varying doses, is among the few proposed treatment options for electrical status epilepticus during slow wave sleep in children. We sought to retrospectively evaluate the long-term efficacy of high-dose oral diazepam in reducing electrographic and clinical evidence of electrical status epilepticus during slow wave sleep in children. Additionally, we surveyed caregivers to assess safety and behavioral outcomes related to ongoing therapy.
