Natural wetlands are widely used and cost-effective systems for the passive remediation of phosphorus (P)-rich surface waters from various effluent sources. Yet the long-term biogeochemical impacts of effluent loading on wetland P retention capacity are unclear. Here, we had a unique opportunity to document the spatio-temporal evolution of sediment P sorption over a ∼25-year period of constant municipal and industrial effluent loading, as part of a wetland restoration and wastewater treatment strategy in one of the largest restored wetlands in Canada.

Disentangling the effects of cyclical variability in environmental forcing and long-term climate change on natural communities is a major challenge for ecologists, managers, and policy makers across ecosystems. Here we examined whether the vertical distribution of rocky intertidal taxa has shifted with sea-level variability occurring at multiple temporal scales and/or long-term anthropogenic sea-level rise (SLR). Because of the distinct zonation characteristic of intertidal communities, any shift in tidal dynamics or average sea level is expected to have large impacts on community structure and function.

(1) Objectives: This study investigated and compared the wear and flexural strength of two highly filled (injectable), one flowable and one paste composite. (2) Methods: Two highly filled flowable composites (G-aenial Universal Injectable and Beautifil Plus F00), a paste composite (Empress Direct) and a conventional flowable (Tetric EvoFlow) were tested. A two-body wear test was carried out using 10 disc-shaped samples from each group, which were subjected to 200,000 wear machine cycles to simulate wear, followed by Scanning Electron Microscope analysis.

There are now abundant data demonstrating disparities in acute stroke management and prognosis; however, interventions to reduce these disparities remain limited. This special report aims to provide a critical review of the current landscape of disparities in acute stroke care and highlight opportunities to use implementation science to reduce disparities throughout the early care continuum. In the prehospital setting, stroke symptom recognition campaigns that have been successful in reducing prehospital delays used a multilevel approach to education, including mass media, culturally tailored community education, and professional education.

A suite of road sediment and soil samples from a post-industrial city (Detroit, MI) were collected and analyzed for atmospherically-delivered Pb, Po, Be along with Ra and Cs in the bulk and size-fractionated solid samples. From the measured atmospheric depositional fluxes of Be, Po, and Pb, the initial Po/Pb activity ratio was quantified. In all samples, there is disequilibrium between Po and Pb, with a Po/Pb activity ratio (AR) of <1.

The present article exemplifies the application of the concept of quality by design (QbD) for the systematic development of a nanoparticulate imiquimod (IMQ) emulsion gel formulation as an investigational medicinal product (IMP) for evaluation in an academic phase-I/II clinical trial for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) against the comparator Aldara (EudraCT: 2015-002203-28). The design of the QbD elements of a quality target product profile (QTPP) enables the identification of the critical quality attributes (CQAs) of the drug product as the content of IMQ, the particle-size distribution, the pH, the rheological properties, the permeation rate and the chemical, physical and microbiological stability. Critical material attributes (CMAs) and critical process parameters (CPPs) are identified by using a risk-based approach in an Ishikawa diagram and in a risk-estimation matrix.

Accurate forecasting of organismal responses to climate change requires a deep mechanistic understanding of how physiology responds to present-day variation in the physical environment. However, the road to physiological enlightenment is fraught with complications: predictable environmental fluctuations of any single factor are often accompanied by substantial stochastic variation and rare extreme events, and several factors may interact to affect physiology. Lacking sufficient knowledge of temporal patterns of co-variation in multiple environmental stressors, biologists struggle to design and implement realistic and relevant laboratory experiments.

Even though mollusks' capacity to repair shell damage is usually studied in response to a single event, their shells have to defend them against predatory and environmental threats throughout their potentially multi-decadal life. We measured whether and how mollusks respond to chronic mechanical stress. Once a week for 7 months, we compressed whole live California mussels (Mytilus californianus) for 15 cycles at ∼55% of their predicted one-time breaking force, a treatment known to cause fatigue damage in shells.

High resolution gamma spectrometry is one of the most widely used techniques in the measurements of environmental level Pb in sediment from coastal and freshwater environments and such measurements are needed to establish Pb chronology for the past 100-150 years. Precise measurement of Pb in sediment and soil requires appropriate self-absorption correction for its low-energy (46.5 keV) gamma radiation due to differences in the matrix between the sample and standard used to calibrate the instrument.

Thermal performance curves are commonly used to investigate the effects of heat acclimation on thermal tolerance and physiological performance. However, recent work indicates that the metrics of these curves heavily depend on experimental design and may be poor predictors of animal survival during heat events in the field. In intertidal mussels, cardiac thermal performance (CTP) tests have been widely used as indicators of animals' acclimation or acclimatization state, providing two indices of thermal responses: critical temperature (Tcrit; the temperature above which heart rate abruptly declines) and flatline temperature (Tflat; the temperature where heart rate ceases).

Collective behaviors in biological systems such as coordinated movements have important ecological and evolutionary consequences. While many studies examine within-species variation in collective behavior, explicit comparisons between functionally similar species from different taxonomic groups are rare. Therefore, a fundamental question remains: how do collective behaviors compare between taxa with morphological and physiological convergence, and how might this relate to functional ecology and niche partitioning? The peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs) and the citrullinated proteins that they generate have key roles in innate immunity and rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory arthritis with antibodies that target citrullinated proteins. However, the importance of PADs, particularly PAD2, in the adaptive immune response, both normal and pathogenic, is newly emerging. Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients often develop rheumatoid factors (RFs), antibodies that bind IgG Fc, and anti-modified protein antibodies (AMPAs), multireactive autoantibodies that commonly bind citrullinated, homocitrullinated, and acetylated antigens. Recently, antibodies that bind citrulline-containing IgG epitopes were discovered in RA, suggesting that additional undiscovered IgG epitopes could exist and that IgG could be a shared antigen for RFs and AMPAs. This study was undertaken to reveal new IgG epitopes in rheumatic disease and to determine if multireactive AMPAs bind IgG.
