Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzed real-world data on high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) patients using the Flatiron Health database to assess their risk of disease progression and death.
  • - High-risk patients showed significantly increased probabilities of progressing to active multiple myeloma (MM), dying, or progressing on first-line treatment compared to non-high-risk patients, with risk ratios ranging from 1.7 to 4.0.
  • - The findings underline the poorer outcomes for high-risk SMM patients and emphasize the importance of early intervention strategies for better management.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common infections worldwide that presents with a multitude of symptoms such as lymphadenopathy, fever, and malaise and has associations with Hodgkin's lymphoma. EBV can cause elevations in transaminase values and hyperbilirubinemia; however, EBV will rarely cause hepatitis with cholestatic features. Here we report a case of a 15-year-old male with a past medical history of potential Gilbert's syndrome who presented with jaundice, scleral icterus, mild abdominal pain, and low-grade fever.

Bone morphogenetic protein4 (BMP4) plays numerous roles during embryogenesis and can signal either as a homodimer, or as a more active BMP4/7 heterodimer. BMPs are generated as inactive precursor proteins that dimerize and are cleaved to generate the bioactive ligand and inactive prodomain fragments. In humans, heterozygous mutations within the prodomain of BMP4 are associated with birth defects.

Asphyxiated neonates often undergo therapeutic hypothermia (TH) to reduce morbidity and mortality. As perinatal asphyxia and TH impact neonatal physiology, this could also influence enzyme functionality. Therefore, this study aimed to unravel the impact of age, hypothermia and hypoxia on porcine hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) gene expression, protein abundance and activity.

Patients with relapsed/refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or lymphoblastic lymphoma (LL) have poor outcomes compared with newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve patients. The phase 2, open-label DELPHINUS study evaluated daratumumab (16 mg/kg IV) plus backbone chemotherapy in children with relapsed/refractory B-cell ALL (n = 7) after ≥2 relapses, and children and young adults with T-cell ALL (children, n = 24; young adults, n = 5) or LL (n = 10) after first relapse. The primary end point was complete response (CR) in the B-cell ALL (end of cycle 2) and T-cell ALL (end of cycle 1) cohorts, after which patients could proceed off study to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT).

Androgenetic alopecia, the most common cause of hair loss affecting both men and women, is typically treated using pharmaceutical options, such as minoxidil and finasteride. While these medications work for many individuals, they are not suitable options for all. To date, the only non-pharmaceutical option that the United States Food and Drug Administration has cleared as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia is low-level laser therapy (LLLT).

Secondary cold agglutinin autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) occurs most commonly due to infectious causes like and, more rarely, Epstein-Barr virus(EBV). Here we present a case of a 69-year-old female presenting with generalized weakness, who was found to have cold agglutinin hemolytic anemia. She unfortunately experienced some of the most severe complications of the disease including encephalopathy, hypoxia, and dry necrosis of peripheral extremities.

Species exploiting seasonal environments must alter timings of key life-history events in response to large-scale climatic changes in order to maintain trophic synchrony with required resources. Yet, substantial among-species variation in long-term phenological changes has been observed. Advancing from simply describing such variation towards predicting future phenological responses requires studies that rigorously quantify and explain variation in the direction and magnitude of changing timings across diverse species in relation to key ecological and life-history variables.

Sympatric species are often locally adapted to distinct microhabitats. However, temporal variation may cause local maladaptation and species boundary breakdown, especially during extreme climatic events leading to episodic selection. Repeated reciprocal transplants can reveal the interplay between short and long-term patterns of natural selection.

Background: The standard imaging technique for the diagnosis of intestinal malrotation remains the upper gastro-intestinal series (UGIS). The lateral view is promoted as important for making a diagnosis. For this, the lateral view should be of adequate quality, and radiologists must know the normal appearance as well as the appearance of duodenal variants, as misdiagnosis may lead to unnecessary surgery.

There is broad evidence that the main driver of the ongoing biodiversity crisis is land-use change, which reduces and fragments habitats. The consequence of habitat fragmentation on behavioural responses of fitness-related traits in insects have been so far understudied. In herbivorous insects, oviposition-related behaviours determine access to larval food, and the fate of the next generation.

While guidance on how to design rigorous evaluation studies abounds, prescriptive guidance on how to include critical process and context measures through the construction of exposure variables is lacking. Capturing nuanced intervention dosage information within a large-scale evaluation is particularly complex. The Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative is part of the Diversity Program Consortium, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
