Article Synopsis
  • The study examines cerebrovascular disease patterns in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, specifically Vietnamese-born residents in South-Western Sydney, compared to Australian-born individuals from 2011 to 2020.
  • Vietnamese patients showed significantly higher rates of hypertension and dyslipidaemia but lower rates of ischaemic heart disease, smoking, and alcohol abuse compared to their Australian counterparts.
  • The findings highlight unique risk factors in the Vietnamese community, with diabetes and glycosylated haemoglobin identified as predictors for intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAD), suggesting that culturally tailored health interventions could be beneficial.

Brain stem neural tracts and nuclei may be disturbed prior to observable neuronal atrophy in AD. In this perspective, we discuss the notion of functional deficits presenting prior to structural abnormalities in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Imaging of inferior colliculi using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) shows significant decrease in the neuronal markers, N acetyl aspartate/creatine ratio and increase in the glial marker myo-Inositol, in subjects with Mini-Mental State Examination scores greater than 24 and with no signs of atrophy in their MRI of the medial temporal lobe.

Elderly patients account for 30% of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) but are under-represented in randomized controlled trials of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Meta-analysis of "real world" studies evaluating 90-day outcomes in elderly patients ≥80 years have been limited to small numbers undergoing EVT with older generation devices. A retrospective analysis of 181 prospectively collected patients who received EVT for anterior circulation AIS at an Australian center over 2.
