Among the etiologic agents of emerging infectious diseases are several bacterial organisms that naturally reside in animal and arthropod hosts. The most compelling emerging bacterial zoonotic and vector-borne diseases in the United States are Lyme disease; a Southern erythema migrans-like illness; human monocytic ehrlichiosis; human granulocytic ehrlichiosis; a novel cat flea-associated typhus group rickettsiosis; bartonelloses of immunocompetent and immunocompromised persons, particularly with AIDS; and sylvatic plague. Some of these antimicrobial-treatable infections are life threatening.

This paper describes an algorithm to estimate the position and orientation (pose) of artificial knee implants from fluoroscopy images using computer vision. The resulting information is used to determine contact position from " in vivo" bone motion in implanted knees. This determination can be used to support the development of improved prosthetic knee implants.

The objective of this study was to characterize the adenosine receptor (AdoR) antagonistic properties of a newly synthesized alkylxanthine, 1,3-dipropyl-8[2-(5,6-epoxy)norbornyl]xanthine (ENX), and compare them to those of 1,3-dipropyl-8-(cyclo-pentyl)xanthine (CPX), 1,3-dipropyl-8-(3-noradamantyl)xanthine (NAX) and (+/-)-N6-endo-norbornan-2-yl-9-methyladenine (N-0861). We used fluoroscopy to study the kinematics of the knee in 47 patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and four control subjects with normal knees while performing a single-leg deep-knee bend. The videos were analysed using still photographs taken at 5 degrees increments of flexion. A retrospective case-control study investigated 45 Missouri outpatients with annular rashes meeting a surveillance case definition for erythema migrans and with onset in 1990-1991. Risk factors included being male, living near a body of water, and hunting. Twenty patients (44%) associated their rash with the bite of a tick; of these, 5 described an adult Amblyomma americanum.

A novel poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production system in which the expression and gene dosage of the Alcaligenes eutrophus pha biosynthetic operon were effectively regulated by cultivation temperature was constructed in Escherichia coli. The pha operon was fused to the negatively regulated tac promoter and cloned into a vector in which the copy number is temperature dependent. The objective of this study was to determine whether chronic infusion (7 days) of an A1-adenosine receptor (A1-AdoR) agonist, R-N6-phenylisopropyladenosine (R-PIA), causes homologous and/or heterologous desensitization of the atrioventricular (AV) nodal A1-AdoR system in the guinea pig. The negative dromotropic effects of adenosine, the A1-AdoR agonist N6-cyclopentyladenosine and the muscarinic cholinergic agonist carbachol on hearts from control and treated animals were compared. The potencies of adenosine and N6-cyclopentyladenosine to prolong AV nodal conduction time of hearts from treated animals were significantly reduced compared with control.

In Escherichia coli carrying the poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) biosynthesis pathway on a plasmid (pha+), the function of the ackA (acetate kinase) and pta (phosphotransacetylase) genes is necessary for efficient incorporation of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3-HV) into the copolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (P(3HB-co-3HV)).
