This Research Communication set out to (1) evaluate the behaviour and performance of dairy calves raised on pasture individually or in groups, and (2) evaluate the influence of physical enrichment on the behaviour and performance of dairy calves raised in groups on pasture. Although there was no difference in grazing behaviour when housed in groups, calves spent longer eating concentrate, ruminating and drinking water. Additionaly, calves housed individually spend part of their time trying to get close to a neighbouring calf.

Objectives: Acute central nervous system (CNS) infections in children can lead to neurological complications and mortality. This study aimed to identify the clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, and cerebrospinal fluid characteristics indicative of CNS infections and define the risk factors that lead to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission in the pediatric population of Şanlıurfa, a city in southeastern Turkey.

Methods: This retrospective analysis included patients aged 1 month to 18 years who were treated for acute CNS infections in the Şanlıurfa Training and Research Hospital between January 2020 and May 2023.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of early group housing on the performance, health, and behavior of dairy calves during the preweaning period using systematic and meta-analysis approaches. Peer-reviewed articles written in English that compared dairy calves individually and group-housed with performance, health, or behavior outcomes were collected from Web of Science, PubMed, and CABDirect databases. The resulting articles (n = 850) underwent a 4-step appraisal process following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses protocols, resulting in a final sample of 51 articles containing 85 studies.

Poultry production faces significant challenges, including high feed prices, diseases, and thermal stress, which impact broiler welfare and productivity. Despite advances in cooling technologies and ventilation, preslaughter operations still lead to considerable losses. This review highlights the need for the improved management of thermal environments and animal logistics.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined different methods of assessing feeding behavior in Nellore cattle, focusing on "feed events" versus "meals" to understand their genetic relationships and feed efficiency.
  • It analyzed multiple traits related to feeding events and meals, calculating heritabilities and correlations using sophisticated genetic models.
  • Results showed that more efficient cattle had shorter feeding times and faster eating rates, suggesting a genetic link between feeding behavior and feed efficiency traits.

  • The study investigates how body measurements and ultrasound features affect the choice between fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and fine-needle non-aspiration biopsy (FNNAB) for diagnosing thyroid nodules, aiming for better management and cancer detection.
  • A total of 188 cases with 225 nodules were analyzed, comparing the diagnostic effectiveness of FNAB and FNNAB based on criteria like nodule shape, size, vascularity, and patient obesity.
  • Results showed that FNAB had a higher diagnostic success rate than FNNAB, especially in specific nodule characteristics and certain patient demographics, indicating its superiority in various clinical situations.

  • - The study investigates the impact of the Restifem® pessary on pelvic floor function in postpartum women, evaluating its effectiveness as both a preventive and therapeutic device from 6 weeks to 12 months after delivery.
  • - 857 women participated, with 137 using the pessary and 133 not; findings revealed that pessary users experienced significantly worse pelvic floor function initially but showed greater improvement in scores related to bladder and pelvic organ prolapse over time.
  • - The results suggest that using the pessary contributes to improved recovery of pelvic floor function, particularly for women experiencing higher levels of dysfunction postpartum, while also highlighting the study's legitimacy through registration in a clinical trials database.

  • The study aimed to determine if patients who underwent percutaneous liver mass biopsy (PLMB) could be safely discharged after a two-hour monitoring period.
  • It involved 375 patients and found that minor complications occurred in 18.93% and major complications in 2.13%, mostly within the first two hours.
  • The conclusion indicated that the two-hour monitoring is sufficient for identifying most complications, suggesting that longer monitoring does not significantly enhance patient care.

  • Low back pain is a significant issue in clinics, often involving neuropathic pain, and the superior cluneal nerve entrapment syndrome is a key but underdiagnosed cause that requires careful diagnosis.
  • A 22-year-old male patient with various health issues was evaluated and prescribed a specific exercise program focusing on lumbar stabilization and gluteal strengthening to address his low back pain.
  • The study highlights that proper diagnosis and targeted exercises can effectively aid in the treatment of cluneal nerve entrapment syndrome, which is often a common factor in chronic low back pain cases.

Introduction: This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Estimation of Physiologic Ability and Surgical Stress (E-PASS) scoring system in predicting postoperative complications following radical cystectomy (RC).

Materials And Methods: In this single-center retrospective study, we analyzed data from patients who underwent open RC for muscle-invasive bladder cancer by a single surgeon between 2008 and 2023. Cases involving cystectomy for non-urothelial carcinoma or urinary diversion other than ileal conduit were excluded.

  • - Pheochromocytoma is a tumor from adrenal chromaffin cells that produces catecholamines and can be hereditary or sporadic, with the majority being sporadic but some linked to genetic syndromes.
  • - In a study of 33 pheochromocytoma patients, 21% had hereditary cases, which were diagnosed at a significantly younger age and had smaller tumor sizes compared to sporadic cases.
  • - The research found that hereditary patients showed higher levels of urinary norepinephrine and recommended genetic testing, especially for early-onset cases and those with bilateral tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated changes in body characteristics, milk yield, and milk composition of primiparous dairy Gyr cows on pasture in Southeast Brazil over a 10-month lactation period from 2013 to 2015, focusing on factors like body weight, fat thickness, and progesterone levels.
  • - Results showed that cows experienced weight loss and decreased body condition and milk yield as lactation progressed, while milk fat, protein, and solids increased.
  • - Although the thermal environment wasn't a significant heat challenge, a positive correlation was noted between the temperature humidity index (THI) and milk yield and components shortly before milking, indicating that both THI and lactation duration impact milk production and quality.

Article Synopsis
  • - Some viruses, despite being present in saliva and semen, are not mainly transmitted through oral or sexual routes due to the presence of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in these fluids, which can inhibit viral infections.
  • - The study found that these EVs expose a molecule called phosphatidylserine (PS), which plays a crucial role in preventing viruses like Zika from attaching and entering cells by blocking specific receptors they normally use.
  • - While EVs effectively combat a variety of viruses through this mechanism, they do not interfere with certain other viruses like HIV or SARS-CoV-2, explaining why the transmission of these viruses often occurs through different pathways rather than direct human contact.

Introduction: The lamina papyracea is the thin line between the ethmoid sinus and the medial orbital wall. Knowledge of the presence of the lamina papyracea dehiscence (LPD) bears critical importance to prevent misdiagnosis of fractures at this level and to define the anatomy before sinonasal surgery, including Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). The present study is therefore intended to determine the incidence of LPD in paranasal computed tomography, to identify its imaging characteristics in CT, and to compare with the literature.
