Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effects of an FGF-2 soaked collagen membrane on healing full-thickness chronic rotator cuff tears in rabbits, comparing it with a standard repair technique.
  • After creating rotator cuff tears in rabbits, one group was treated with the collagen membrane while the other underwent traditional repair, but neither method showed significant differences in biomechanical strength or histological healing.
  • The findings suggest that using an FGF-2 soaked collagen membrane does not enhance the healing process of chronic rotator cuff tears, prompting the need for further research into other treatment options.

Background:  Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most severe complications of spinal fusion surgery that lead to increased morbidity and mortality rates. Prophylactic antibiotic usage is one of the methods that reduce the possibility of SSI in this procedure. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of local subfascial teicoplanin usage on radiologic and functional outcomes and compare it to the effect of vancomycin on surgical outcomes in patients who underwent decompression with posterior instrumentation (DPI) for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS).

Background: This retrospective study compares tibial component rotations and radiological and functional outcomes in patients who underwent Oxford medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), using the antero-posterior (AP) tibia axis or anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) as the landmarks for the direction of the vertical cut.

Methods: A total of 86 patients, who underwent Oxford medial UKA were divided into 2 groups, each consisting of 43 patients, according to the use of AP axis (group I) or ASIS (group II) as landmarks for the rotation of vertical tibial cut and compared for the radiological and functional outcomes. Tibial component rotations (α-angle), involvement of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) fossa, and instant bearing position (IBP) were measured on computed tomography (CT) images.

Study Design: Retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected data.

Objective: Lumbar flexibility(LF) is generally defined with preoperative side bending films;it is not clear what percentage of LF predicts the spontaneous lumbar curve correction (SLCC) at long term follow up. Aim of this study was to find out cut-off value of preoperative LF,apical vertebra rotation(AVR) and apical vertebral translation(AVT);which may predict more than 50%SLCC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three regional anesthesia techniques—ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block, quadratus lumborum (QL) block, and caudal epidural block—on pain management for pediatric patients undergoing elective lower abdominal surgery.
  • Ninety-four patients aged 6 months to 14 years were randomly assigned to one of the three anesthesia methods, receiving bupivacaine for pain relief.
  • Results showed that the QL block provided better postoperative pain control with lower Pediatric Objective Pain Scale scores and shorter hospital stays compared to the caudal block, making it a recommended option for pediatric perioperative analgesia if resources allow.

Proximal metatarsal osteotomy is the most effective technique for correcting hallux valgus deformities, especially in metatarsus primus varus. However, these surgeries are technically demanding and prone to complications, such as nonunion, implant failure, and unexpected extension of the osteotomy to the tarsometatarsal joint. In a preclinical study, we evaluated the biomechanical properties of the fixator and compared it with compression screws for treating hallux valgus with a proximal metatarsal osteotomy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how adding a foot ring to a circular external fixator (CEF) affects recovery in patients with distal tibia fractures, comparing outcomes between two groups over a long follow-up period.
  • - Researchers evaluated 56 patients, finding that those treated with CEF (average AOFAS score 82.47) had significantly better functional outcomes than those treated with CEF-FR (average AOFAS score 71.54).
  • - The study concluded that using a CEF without a foot ring may lead to improved functional results in treating these types of fractures, with no significant differences in pain levels between the groups.
