Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic genomic sequencing is becoming essential in nephrology, with efforts to enhance its national implementation to benefit patient outcomes.
  • A national study established 20 kidney genetics clinics across Australia from 2013 to 2022, offering genomic testing for patients with suspected monogenic kidney diseases and facilitating the collection of data on diagnostic experiences.
  • The initiative successfully integrated a multidisciplinary approach to kidney genetics, optimizing care for patients while adapting to ongoing technological advancements and preparing for broader healthcare funding for genomic testing.

The KidGen Collaborative's Policy Implementation Workshop 2023 celebrated the 10th anniversary of Australia's first kidney genetics clinic in Brisbane. This event marked the establishment of a national network now comprising 19 kidney genetics clinics across Australia, all dedicated to providing equitable access to genomic testing for families affected by genetic kidney diseases. The workshop reflected on past progress and outlined future objectives for kidney genetics in Australia, recognising the collaborative efforts of clinical teams, researchers, and patients.

Purpose: Drugs that attenuate hyperactivation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-Akt and Ras-mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways are emerging treatments for children with rare, intractable vascular anomalies or related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) with an eligible genetic diagnosis. However, access to genetic testing remains a barrier to genetic diagnosis. Here, we implement a targeted molecular diagnostic strategy for vascular anomalies or PROS.

Genomic technologies are now utilized for the genetic diagnosis of vascular anomalies. This provides the opportunity for genetic counselors to make a significant contribution to patient care for this complex disease. The aim of this study was to explore Australian healthcare professionals' perspectives on the relatively recent integration of molecular diagnostic testing for vascular anomalies, with or without genetic counseling support.

We have previously reported that pathogenic variants in a key metabolite repair enzyme NAXD cause a lethal neurodegenerative condition triggered by episodes of fever in young children. However, the clinical and genetic spectrum of NAXD deficiency is broadening as our understanding of the disease expands and as more cases are identified. Here, we report the oldest known individual succumbing to NAXD-related neurometabolic crisis, at 32 years of age.

The purpose of this study was to determine effects of various sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on ovarian response and embryo quality in Boer does when there was a superovulation treatment regimen imposed. Pluriparous does were randomly assigned to be treated with 300 g of one of four experimental supplements containing linseed oil (LO), soybean oil (SO), palm oil (PO), or a control supplement without fatty acids (CO), for 15 days. Does were fitted with a controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device containing 0.

Sensing and responding to environmental water deficiency and osmotic stresses are essential for the growth, development, and survival of plants. Recently, an osmolality-sensing ion channel called OSCA1 was discovered that functions in sensing hyperosmolality in Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure and function of an OSCA1 homolog from rice (; OsOSCA1.2), leading to a model of how it could mediate hyperosmolality sensing and transport pathway gating.

About 50% of the world's arable land is strongly acidic (pH ≤ 5). The low pH solubilizes root-toxic ionic aluminium (Al) species from clay minerals, driving the evolution of counteractive adaptations in cultivated crops. The food crop Sorghum bicolor upregulates the membrane-embedded transporter protein SbMATE in its roots.

Organic cation transporter 1 (OCT1, SLC22A1), like many solute carrier 22 (SLC22) family members, is important for the disposition of clinically important drugs, metabolites and signaling molecules. Several studies suggest that SLC22 family (eg. organic anion transporters or OATs and OCTs) bind and possibly transport prostaglandins with relatively high affinity (submicromolar).
