When Black women of Christian faith in the USA receive secular help for psychological symptoms, their spiritual and religious communities often view the decision negatively. The women may feel shamed, ostracized, and condemned. They often experience emotional, physical, and spiritual trauma from the rejection that increases the frequency, duration, and intensity of their psychological symptoms.

Malignant ocular teratoid medulloepithelioma in two cats.

Medulloepithelioma is a type of rare primitive neuroectodermal tumour. Most medulloepitheliomas are intraocular and they have been most frequently reported in horses and dogs. A single feline case has been reported but the teratoid form has not been previously reported in cats.

A Tool to Guide Clinical Nurse Specialist Orientation, Professional Development, and Evaluation.

Purpose/objectives: Currently, orientation for clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) in the Baltimore region is based on past practices: facility-specific or position-specific. A Chesapeake Bay affiliate work group identified a need to develop a theory-driven, competency-based program and tool to guide orientation and ongoing professional development reflecting the scope of CNS practice.

Description Of The Project/program: The tool incorporates Benner's concepts of novice-to-expert competence levels, guides progressive development of the CNS, and has relevant assessment metrics that highlight contributions to the patient, nurse, and system.

Globe penetration in a cat following maxillary nerve block for dental surgery.

Clinical Summary: Dental treatment was carried out in an 8.5-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat found to have tooth resorption. Right mandibular, and right and left maxillary nerve blocks were administered using a 1 ml syringe attached to a 25 G x 5/8 inch needle and an intraoral technique.

A nationwide study comparing end-of-life care for men and women veterans.

Background: The quality of end-of-life (EOL) care at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMC) has improved. To date, however, the quality and outcomes of end-of-life care delivered to women veterans have not been examined.

Objective: The goal of this study was to evaluate gender differences in the quality of EOL care received by patients in VAMCs nationwide.

Clinical experience with butyl-2-cyanoacrylate adhesive in the management of canine and feline corneal disease.

Purpose: To examine and evaluate clinical indications and postoperative outcome in a series of small animal patients in which corneal disease was managed by the application of butyl 2-cyanoacrylate adhesive.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective study all small animal patients were identified that presented to the Royal Veterinary College, University of London over a 2-year period, in which corneal disease was managed by the application of butyl 2-cyanoacrylate. Indications for application, complicating factors prior to gluing, glue retention time, postoperative comfort, and extent of subsequent corneal reaction and scarring were noted for each case.

A study of the morphology of canine eyes enucleated or eviscerated due to complications following phacoemulsification.

This study was undertaken to describe the histopathologic abnormalities observed in canine eyes enucleated or eviscerated due to complications following phacoemulsification; to correlate these findings with the clinical abnormalities reported, and to suggest, if apparent, likely causes and effects of these abnormalities. Sixty-six canine globes or evisceration samples received for histopathologic interpretation over a 10-year period (1990-2000) were studied. All globes and evisceration samples were obtained from clinical patients examined by board-certified ophthalmologists.
