Collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) is most often associated with fast progression to kidney failure with an incidence apparently higher in Brazil than in other countries. However, the reason for this occurrence is unknown. To better understand this, we performed an integrated analysis of clinical, histological, therapeutic, causative genetic and genetic ancestry data in a highly genetically admixed cohort of 70 children and adult patients with idiopathic CG (ICG).

According to the Oxford Classification, changes in the kidney vascular compartment are not related with worse outcomes. This paper aims to assess the impact of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in the outcomes of Brazilian patients with IgAN.

Renal involvement is classically manifested as a glomerulopathy, most often membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis or focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis. We report a case of collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) associated with SM and high-risk APOL1 genotype (HRG).

Cisplatin is a highly effective chemotherapeutic agent. However, its use is limited by nephrotoxicity. Enalapril is an angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitor used for the treatment of hypertension, mainly through the reduction of angiotensin II formation, but also through the increase of kinins half-life.

We examined the renoprotective effects of Ly, a novel non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) blocker, through two experimental protocols: In Protocol 1, male Munich-Wistar rats underwent 5/6 renal ablation (Nx), being divided into: Nx+V, receiving vehicle, Nx+Eple, given eplerenone, 150 mg/kg/day, and Nx+Ly, given Ly, 20 mg/kg/day. A group of untreated sham-operated rats was also studied.

Protocols that reduce renal cisplatin toxicity will allow higher doses to be used in cisplatin treatment. Here, we compare physical exercise and caloric restriction (CR) as protocols to reduce cisplatin renal injury in mice.

The association of AS and immunocomplex nephropathies is uncommon. This is a case of a 37-year-old woman with family history of X-linked AS, including 4 affected sons.

Background: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) represent an option for the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI). It is known that young stem cells are better than are aged stem cells at reducing the incidence of the senescent phenotype in the kidneys. The objective of this study was to determine whether AKI leads to premature, stress-induced senescence, as well as whether human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (huMSCs) can prevent ischaemia/reperfusion injury (IRI)-induced renal senescence in rats.

Methods: We analyzed data from 136 post-reperfusion biopsies performed in deceased donor renal transplanted patients from November 2008 to May 2012. We analyzed the presence of acute tubular necrosis (ATN), arteriolar hyalinosis (AH), intimal thickness (IT), interstitial fibrosis (IF) and glomerulosclerosis (GS).
Natural killer (NK) cells have been implicated in graft dysfunction. Here, we formulated hypothesis that distinct patterns of expression NK cells markers correlated with acute rejection in kidney transplantation. Therefore, we studied the pattern of NK cell markers CD56, CD57, and CD16 in different compartments of biopsies obtained from recipients diagnosed with acute graft rejection, with or without donor-specific antibodies (DSA).

In this new study, we investigated whether equal or even better protection could be obtained by combining losartan and furosemide. Nx was performed in 58 Munich-Wistar rats.

We report herein a patient who presented nephrotic syndrome (NS) as the first manifestation of JSSc with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). A female patient presented steroid-sensitive NS at the age of 12 years.

Methods: We separated 28 C57Bl/6 male mice into 4 groups: untreated WT animals, untreated B2 knockout mice, glycerol-treated WT and glycerol-treated B2 knockout mice. Glycerol-treated animals received one intramuscular injections of glycerol solution (50% v/v, 7 mL/kg).
Several techniques to induce renal ischemia have been proposed: clamp, PVA particles, and catheter-balloon. We report the development of a controlled, single-insult model of unilateral renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) without contralateral nephrectomy, using a suitable model, the pig. This is a balloon-catheter-based model using a percutaneous, interventional radiology procedure.

Kidney injury, heart injury, and cytokine-induced vascular hyperpermeability are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality in sepsis. Although the mechanism remains unknown, apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) mimetic peptide 4F reduces inflammation and protects HDL levels, which are reduced in sepsis. We hypothesized that 4F also protects kidneys and hearts in a rat model of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP).

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a lipid mediator with important pro-inflammatory effects, being synthesized by several cell types including kidney cells. Although there is evidence of its involvement in acute renal dysfunction, its role in progressive kidney injury is not completely known. In the present study, we investigated the role of PAF receptor (PAFR) in an experimental model of chronic renal disease.

Cystic mice were hypertensive at 5 and 13 weeks of age, a phenotype not seen in noncystic controls and Pkd1-haploinsufficient animals that do not develop renal cysts.

For this reason, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy may be associated with a slower graft function recovery. However, an adequate protective response may balance the ischemia reperfusion damage.
