Objective: to analyze the development of the labor market in Gerontological Nursing in Brazil, between 1970 and 1996.

Method: a descriptive-qualitative study with a historical approach that uses the oral history of 14 research nurses working in the historical period, based on the ideas of Eliot Freidson.

Results: Nursing overcame barriers to change the care practices to elderly people in the period described, considering the lack of a specific labor market; the need for theoretical knowledge for Gerontology care; the scarcity of research and researchers in the field; the emergence of caregivers for elderly people; the construction of multidisciplinarity and the transformation of institutions for a long-term stay.

The objective of the present study was to identify the politic activities implemented by gerontological nursing in Brazil in the period spanning 1970 to 1996, which aimed at making it an effective specialty in elderly care. This descriptive-qualitative study was performed using a historical approach, using thematic oral history. Fourteen nurses, pioneers in the field, took part in the study.

This is an integrated literature review intended to get to know the Brazilian scientific production regarding the functional capacity of the elderly. BDENF, LILACS, MEDLINE and SciELO databases were consulted in the sampling period from January, 2001, to September, 2010. The necessity of the cientificity in the nursing's working process, pushed by the science's advance and enclosure in the job market, configured itself in the establishment of nursing's process. The purpose of this study was to analyze in the nursing's legal documents, the nurse's duty opposite the Brazilian society, in the perspective of the scientific methodology in the working process. In a historic approach, the laws and designation-laws that normalized the nursing usage in the period that the nursing process was being introduced in Brazil.

This inquiry has been carried out among professors in the Nursing program from Institutions of Higher Education in the State of Paraná. It aimed at investigating the teaching process of Health Care Assistance Methodology for Nursing, by promoting and opening possibilities for interchange among these professors by means of a Forum.
