Background: The expansion of rotavirus (RV) immunization in several countries reduced the burden of acute diarrheal disease (ADD) and diarrhea-associated mortality. Although community transmission of live attenuated monovalent rotavirus vaccine (G1P[8] RV1) virus has been demonstrated in children and household contacts, fecal shedding of these strains in neonates and infants under six weeks of age has never been demonstrated. The objective of the study was to assess ADD and rotavirus vaccine strain shedding before and after immunization through 24 months of age.

We report Zika virus (ZIKV) vertical transmission in 130 infants born to PCR+ mothers at the time of the Rio de Janeiro epidemic of 2015-2016. Serum and urine collected from birth through the first year of life were tested by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and/or IgM Zika MAC-ELISA. Recent studies have investigated whether the human histo-blood group antigen (HBGAs) could affect the effectiveness of the oral rotavirus vaccines, suggesting secretor positive individuals develop a more robust response. We investigated the Rotavirus A (RVA) shedding in association with the host susceptibility profile in children from a birth community-cohort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2014 to 2018. Norovirus has emerged as an important viral agent of acute pediatric gastroenteritis, with a growing genetic diversity reported in the last decades. Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) present on the surface of enterocytes are susceptibility factors for norovirus infection and differ between populations which could affects the epidemiology and evolution of these viruses. Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have widely demonstrated their convenient performances as drug-delivery systems, there is still work to do to fully understand the drug incorporation/delivery processes from these materials. In this work, a combined experimental and computational investigation of the main structural and physicochemical parameters driving drug adsorption/desorption kinetics was carried out. Two model drugs (aspirin and ibuprofen) and three water-stable, biocompatible MOFs (MIL-100(Fe), UiO-66(Zr), and MIL-127(Fe)) have been selected to obtain a variety of drug-matrix couples with different structural and physicochemical characteristics.

Despite increasing interest in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the biomedical field, developing specific formulations suitable for different administration routes is still a main challenge. Here, we propose a simple, fast and bio-friendly press-molding method for the preparation of cutaneous patches based on composites made from the drug nanocarrier MIL-100(Fe) and biopolymers. The physicochemical properties of the patches (structure, hydration, bioadhesive and swelling properties), as well as their encapsulation and release capabilities (both in ex vitro and ex vivo models), were evaluated using active ingredients such as the challenging cosmetic liporeductor, caffeine, and the model analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug, ibuprofen.

A series of fourteen porous Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with different compositions (Fe, Zn, and Zr; carboxylates or imidazolates) and structures have been successfully synthesised at the nanoscale and fully characterised by XRPD, FTIR, TGA, N porosimetry, TEM, DLS and ζ-potential. Their toxicological assessment was performed using two different cell lines: human epithelial cells from foetal cervical carcinoma (HeLa) and murine macrophage cell line (J774). It appears that MOF nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit low cytotoxicity, comparable to those of other commercialised nanoparticulate systems, the less toxic being the Fe carboxylate and the more toxic being the zinc imidazolate NPs.

The major rivers of the Amazon River basin and their biota are threatened by the planned construction of large hydroelectric dams that are expected to have strong impacts on floodplain plant communities. The present study presents forest inventories from three floodplain sites colonized by alluvial riparian vegetation in the Tapajós, Xingu and Tocantins River basins in eastern Amazonian. Results indicate that tree species of the highly specialized alluvial riparian vegetation are clearly distinct among the three river basins, although they are not very distinct from each other and environmental constraints are very similar.

The influence of the metal ion in the mesoporous metal trimesate MIL-100(Al(3+), Cr(3+), Fe(3+), V(3+)) on the adsorptive removal of N/S-heterocyclic molecules from fuels has been investigated by combining isotherms for adsorption from a model fuel solution with microcalorimetric and IR spectroscopic characterizations. The results show a clear influence of the different metals (Al, Fe, Cr, V) on the affinity for the heterocyclic compounds, on the integral adsorption enthalpies, and on the uptake capacities. Among several factors, the availability of coordinatively unsaturated sites and the presence of basic sites next to the coordinative vacancies are important factors contributing to the observed affinity differences for N-heterocyclic compounds.

Meningococcal strains belonging to clonal complex cc60 are not associated with hypervirulent lineages and were never reported as causing disease in Latin American countries. This is the first report of a fatal meningitis case caused by a cc60 clonal complex meningococcus in Brazil. Despite the immune-compromised state of the patient, the fatal outcome here described shows the potential pathogenic behavior of strains belonging to this clonal complex and how compromised hosts can be susceptible to meningococcal infections even if the strain is not particularly invasive.
