Toxicological findings about an anticancer fraction with casearins described by traditional and alternative techniques as support to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Extracts, essential oils and molecules from Casearia sylvestris have popularly shown pharmacological actions against chronic diseases, as anxiety, inflammation, cancer and dyslipidemia. In the context of antitumoral therapy, we investigated in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo toxicological changes induced by a Fraction with Casearins (FC) and its component Casearin X isolated from C. sylvestris on animal and vegetal cells, and upon invertebrates and mammals.

Results and complications of CT-guided transthoracic fine-needle aspiration biopsy of pulmonary lesions.

Objective: To analyze the cytological findings of CT-guided percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsies of the lung, to demonstrate the diagnostic feasibility of the method in the investigation of pulmonary lesions, and to determine the complications of the procedure, evaluating its safety.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of 89 patients with various types of pulmonary lesions who underwent 97 procedures over a period of five years. The patients were divided into groups regarding the indication for the procedure: suspicion of primary lung cancer (stages IIIB or IV); suspicion of lung cancer (stages I, II, or IIIA) and clinical contraindications for surgery; suspicion of pulmonary metastasis from other organs; and pulmonary lesions with benign radiological aspect.

Is higher prevalence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in women with lupus due to immunosuppression?

Background: Cervical cancer (CC) is still the second in prevalence and mortality among women. In spite of previously observed higher incidence of cervical dysplasia among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, few studies have considered the influence of classic risk factors and the use of immunosuppressors (IM).

Objectives: To study cervical dysplasia prevalence among SLE patients submitted or not to immunosuppression and to evaluate its association with classic risk factors.
