Background: Belongingness is an important factor in the social development of medical students, and the ability to quantify belongingness in medical students may provide additional metrics by which we can compare different learning environments to help explore differential attainment. Previous studies looking at the measurement of belongingness have demonstrated good internal and external validity for tools designed to measure this facet of student experience. This study aimed to explore the use of the Exeter Belongingness Assessment Tool (EBAT) as one potential source of evidence in the study of student learning experience on clinical placements, which could be used to support quality assurance of clinical learning.

The clinical implementation of currently used devices for intraoperative fixation monitoring of femoral implants via vibration-based methods in cementless total hip arthroplasty is challenging, due to practical and regulatory issues. Motivated by the effectiveness of electromagnetic excitation in similar dental applications, this study investigates the use of electromagnetic excitation for femoral implant stability monitoring during cementless total hip arthroplasty. The results obtained from electromagnetic excitation were largely consistent with reference results obtained through impact excitation, with a Pearson Correlation Coefficient of 0.

The study evaluates the accuracy of predicting intracochlear pressure during bone conduction stimulation using promontory velocity and ear canal pressure, as less invasive alternatives to intracochlear pressure. Stimulating with a percutaneous bone conduction device implanted in six human cadaveric ears, measurements were taken across various intensities, frequencies, and stimulation positions. Results indicate that intracochlear pressure linearly correlates with ear canal pressure ( = 0.

Recent declines in insect abundances, especially populations of wild pollinators, pose a threat to many natural and agricultural ecosystems. Traditional species monitoring relies on morphological character identification and is inadequate for efficient and standardized surveys. DNA barcoding has become a standard approach for molecular identification of organisms, aiming to overcome the shortcomings of traditional biodiversity monitoring.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, viral sequencing has documented 131 individual mutations in the viral spike protein across 48 named variants. To determine the ability of vaccine-mediated humoral immunity to keep pace with continued SARS-CoV-2 evolution, we assessed the neutralization potency of sera from 76 vaccine recipients collected after 2 to 6 immunizations against a comprehensive panel of mutations observed during the pandemic. Remarkably, while many individual mutations that emerged between 2020 and 2022 exhibit escape from sera following primary vaccination, few escape boosted sera.

Future far-infrared astrophysics observatories will require focal plane arrays containing thousands of ultrasensitive, superconducting detectors, each of which require efficient optical coupling to the telescope fore-optics. At longer wavelengths, many approaches have been developed, including feedhorn arrays and macroscopic arrays of lenslets. However, with wavelengths as short as 25 µm, optical coupling in the far infrared remains challenging.

Introduction: Uganda has until recently mostly referred patients for complex hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery abroad due to lack of local expertize. We report indications and a spectrum of surgeries performed in the first 4 years following the establishment of a routine HPB service at Lubaga Hospital (LH), Kampala, Uganda. We also detailed the challenges encountered in setting up this service.

Protein-based virus-like particles (P-VLPs) are commonly used to spatially organize antigens and enhance humoral immunity through multivalent antigen display. However, P-VLPs are thymus-dependent antigens that are themselves immunogenic and can induce B cell responses that may neutralize the platform. Here, we investigate thymus-independent DNA origami as an alternative material for multivalent antigen display using the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, the primary target of neutralizing antibody responses.

Intersectionality is a transformative analytic tool for identifying and challenging how intersecting, systemic power relations generate differential outcomes in quality of life (P. Collins, 2019; Crenshaw, 1989). Intersectionality identifies how varied forms of power relations are interconnected and mutually constituted: simultaneously influencing and influenced by one another.

Pedicle drilling is a complex and critical spinal surgery task. Detecting breach or penetration of the surgical tool to the cortical wall during pilot-hole drilling is essential to avoid damage to vital anatomical structures adjacent to the pedicle, such as the spinal cord, blood vessels, and nerves. Currently, the guidance of pedicle drilling is done using image-guided methods that are radiation intensive and limited to the preoperative information.

Structure-guided rational immunogen design can generate optimized immunogens that elicit a desired humoral response. Design strategies often center upon targeting conserved sites on viral glycoproteins that will ultimately confer potent neutralization. For SARS-CoV-2 (SARS-2), the surface-exposed spike glycoprotein includes a broadly conserved portion, the receptor binding motif (RBM), that is required to engage the host cellular receptor, ACE2.

Multivalent antigen display is a well-established principle to enhance humoral immunity. Protein-based virus-like particles (VLPs) are commonly used to spatially organize antigens. However, protein-based VLPs are limited in their ability to control valency on fixed scaffold geometries and are thymus-dependent antigens that elicit neutralizing B cell memory themselves, which can distract immune responses.
