Noroviruses (NoVs) are the major cause of acute epidemic gastroenteritis in industrialized countries. Outbreak strains are predominantly genogroup II (GII) NoV, but genogroup I (GI) strains are regularly found in oyster related outbreaks. The prototype Norwalk virus (GI), has been shown to have high infectivity in a human challenge study.

While the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) community has acknowledged the importance of public and consumer involvement in the HTA process, very few studies have examined how technology-related findings may be reported by the media to the broader public. This paper compares the content of press articles with the content of three Canadian HTA reports that respectively assess electroconvulsive therapy, first-trimester prenatal screening for Down syndrome, and prostate-specific antigen screening for prostate cancer. We qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed 186 press articles addressing the same technologies.

Patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 exhibit a diversity of symptoms that affect many different organs. Among these are cognitive dysfunctions, the origin of which has remained elusive, partly because of the difficulty in accessing neural cells. Here, we have taken advantage of pluripotent stem cell lines derived from embryos identified during a pre-implantation genetic diagnosis for mutant-gene carriers, to produce early neuronal cells.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a major cause of mortality in immunocompromized hosts, most often consecutive to the inhalation of spores of Aspergillus. However, the relationship between Aspergillus concentration in the air and probability of IA is not quantitatively known. In this study, this relationship was examined in a murine model of IA.

Predicting microbial survival requires reference parameters for each micro-organism of concern. When data are abundant and publicly available, a meta-analysis is a useful approach for assessment of these parameters, which can be performed with hierarchical Bayesian modeling. Geobacillus stearothermophilus is a major agent of microbial spoilage of canned foods and is therefore a persistent problem in the food industry.

To model intermolecular excitation transfer between organic chromophores in the framework of Förster theory, the interaction matrix element is needed for all relative orientations and separations of chromophores. Simulations of extended multi-chromophoric systems thus require a fast but reliable approximation scheme to calculate these dipole interactions. By means of a comparative study of the dipole approximation with quantum chemistry, we demonstrate that the usual line-dipole theory, while suitable for short molecules, breaks down for longer molecules with inter-molecular separations similar to or smaller than the length of the interacting chromophores; a limit that is typically found in conjugated polymer thin films.

It is not yet known whether using the new molecular tools to monitor hepatitis A virus (HAV) in shellfish production areas could be useful for improving food safety. HAV contamination can be acute in coastal areas, such as Brittany, France, where outbreaks of hepatitis A have already occurred and have been linked to the consumption of raw shellfish. A quantitative probabilistic approach was carried out to estimate the mean annual risk of hepatitis A in an adult population of raw oyster consumers.

This biodosimetry study used irradiated baboons to investigate the efficacy of a kinetic multiparameter (clinical, physical, and biological) approach for discriminating partial-body irradiation (PBI) and total-body irradiation (TBI). Animals were unilaterally (front) exposed to 60Co gamma rays (8 to 32 cGy min) using either TBI or vertical left hemi-body irradiation (HBI), as follows: 2.5 Gy TBI (n = 2), 5 Gy TBI (n = 2), 5 Gy HBI (n = 2), and 10 Gy HBI (n = 2).

Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major concern for physicians as its response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy remains generally poor, due, in part, to intrinsic resistance to either form of treatment. We previously reported that an irradiation with fast neutrons, which are high-linear energy transfer (LET) particles, massively induced autophagic cell death in the human HCC SK-Hep1 cell line. In the present study, we tested the capacity of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor RAD001 to augment the cytotoxicity of low and high-LET radiation in these cells.

Star-shaped molecules are of growing interest as organic optoelectronic materials. Here a detailed study of their photophysics using fluorescence depolarisation is reported. Fluorescence depolarisation dynamics are studied in branched oligofluorene-truxene molecules with a truxene core and well-defined three-fold symmetry, and are compared with linear fluorene oligomers.

Background & Aims: Most studies on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) originate from tertiary care centers with an academic interest. How this emerging entity is accepted and managed by a wider body of gastroenterologists is unknown, despite significant implications for the diagnosis of at-risk subjects and the utilization of healthcare resources.

Methods: We conducted a survey among 352 French, board-certified gastroenterologists from a large variety of practices to understand the clinical burden, perceived severity, and management patterns of NAFLD.

Health care systems are under pressure to control their increasing costs, to better adapt to evolving demands, to improve the quality and safety of care, and ultimately to ameliorate the health of their populations. This article looks at a battery of organizational options aimed at transforming health care systems and argues that more attention must be paid to reforming the delivery mechanisms that are so crucial for health care systems' overall performance. To support improvement, policies can rely on organizational assets in two ways.

The production of rare radioactive ion beam (RIB) far from the valley of stability is one of the final purposes of the Spiral2 facility in Caen. The RIB will be produced by impinging a deuteron beam onto a carbon sample to produce a high neutron flux, which will interact with a uranium target. The primary deuteron beam is produced by an ion source based on ECR plasma generation.

We have designed, constructed, and evaluated an environmental chamber that has in situ dynamic control of temperature (25 to 90 °C) and relative humidity (0% to 95%). The compact specimen chamber is designed for x-ray scattering in transmission with an escape angle of 2θ = ±30°. The specimen chamber is compatible with a completely evacuated system such as the Rigaku PSAXS system, in which the specimen chamber is placed inside a larger evacuated chamber (flight path).

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the reproducibility of three-dimensional cephalometric landmarks on three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) surface rendering using clinical protocols based on low-dose (35-mAs) spiral CT and cone-beam CT (I-CAT). The absorbed dose levels for radiosensitive organs in the maxillofacial region during exposure in both 3D-CT protocols were also assessed.

Materials And Methods: The study population consisted of ten human dry skulls examined with low-dose CT and cone-beam CT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the current epidemiology of peptic ulcer bleeding in France and evaluate how well practice guidelines are being followed among medical professionals.
  • Out of 3,203 patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, 1,140 had peptic ulcer bleeding, primarily affecting older males, many of whom were on medications that could worsen their condition.
  • Results show that while mortality rates from upper GI bleeding are decreasing and the majority of patients received proton-pump inhibitors, there is a need for better adherence to guidelines and management of related health issues to enhance prevention efforts.

Article Synopsis
  • Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are a promising resource for regenerative medicine, particularly in developing neural cells used in clinical trials for therapy.
  • A study found that when differentiating hESCs into neural stem cells, these cells could be grown for over 50 passages without aging, indicating they may have a prolonged lifespan.
  • However, the presence of a chromosomal defect (1q translocation) in these neural stem cells raises concerns about their safety, as it may lead to poor clinical outcomes, emphasizing the need for strict quality controls in stem cell-derived therapies.

Assessing within-batch and between-batch variability is of major interest for risk assessors and risk managers in the context of microbiological contamination of food. For example, the ratio between the within-batch variability and the between-batch variability has a large impact on the results of a sampling plan. Here, we designed hierarchical Bayesian models to represent such variability.

The respective contribution of fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass to body weight (Wgt) is a relevant indicator of risk for major public health issues. In an earlier study, a Bayesian Network (BN) was designed to predict FFM from a DXA database (1999-2004 NHANES, n = 10,402) with easily accessible variables [sex, age, Wgt, and height (Hgt)]. The objective of the present study was to assess the robustness of these BN predictions in different population contexts (age, BMI, ethnicity, etc.

The molecular mechanisms controlling the differentiation of human basal keratinocyte stem cells towards the epidermis are well characterized, whereas the earliest process leading to the specification of embryonic stem cells into keratinocytes is still not well understood. MicroRNAs are regulators of many cellular events, but evidence for microRNA acting on the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into a specific lineage has been elusive. By using our recent protocol for obtaining functional keratinocytes from hESC, we attempted to analyze the role of microRNAs in the early stages of epidermal differentiation.
