Despite advances in screening, diagnosis, and treatment for prostate cancer (PCa), Black men tend to be diagnosed at younger ages, have higher mortality rates, and are at increased risk of recurrence or metastasis compared to their White counterparts. PCa disparities among Black men are caused by a complex interaction of social, behavioral, and biological factors across the public policy, community, organizational, interpersonal, and individual levels. Key contributing factors include mistrust in the health care system, poor communication between patients and providers, low awareness of screening guidelines, and high medical costs.

CA 19-9 (carbohydrate antigen 19-9) is a tumor marker widely used for the follow-up of patients with pancreatic cancer and other digestive neoplasia. This case report describes a discrepancy between the results of serum CA 19-9 analyses using the Alinity analytical platform (Abbott™) and two other techniques, Kryptor Gold (ThermoFisher Scientific™) and Cobas E411 (Roche™), in the context of a young woman with appendiceal mucocele. In this context, when the serum concentration of CA 19-9 is high, it may raise concerns about potential malignancy or rupture of the mucocele that may lead to tumoral dissemination in the abdominal cavity.

Glucose is a primary energy source for cancer cells. Several lines of evidence support the idea that monocarboxylate transporters, such as MCT1, elicit metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells in glucose-poor environments, allowing them to re-use lactate, a by-product of glucose metabolism, as an alternative energy source with serious consequences for disease progression. We employ a synergistic experimental and mathematical modelling approach to explore the evolutionary processes at the root of cancer cell adaptation to glucose deprivation, with particular focus on the mechanisms underlying the increase in MCT1 expression observed in glucose-deprived aggressive cancer cells.
