In this work, we propose a new protocol for producing model microplastics from an industrial polymer and compare it to a conventional method, cryomilling. Polypropylene industrial pellets were chosen due to their widespread production and frequent presence in the environment, making them a notable source of microplastics. Both protocols start with aging under Ultra-Violet light of the pellets but differ in the subsequent mechanical stress applied-strong vs.

The term "Gilles de la Tourette syndrome", or the more commonly used term "Tourette syndrome" (TS) refers to the association of motor and phonic tics which evolve in a context of variable but frequent psychiatric comorbidity. The syndrome is characterized by the association of several motor tics and at least one phonic tic that have no identifiable cause, are present for at least one year and appear before the age of 18. The presence of coprolalia is not necessary to establish or rule out the diagnosis, as it is present in only 10% of cases.

The aim of this study was devoted into molecular docking calculations to discover the potential antileishmania and antitoxoplasma activities of newly synthesized compounds obtained by applying a practical and simple method under microwave irradiation. All these compounds were tested in vitro for their biological activity against promastigotes, amastigotes, and tachyzoites. Compounds , , and were the most active against both promastigotes and amastigotes, with IC values of less than 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Tourette syndrome primarily affects children and adolescents, yet its impact on their daily lives has not been thoroughly researched.
  • A study involving 62 adolescents analyzed their experiences at school, home, and socially, focusing on which aspects of Tourette syndrome presented the most challenges and their future outlook.
  • Key findings indicated that tic severity worsened school challenges, comorbidities impacted social interactions, and younger patients expressed more negative feelings about their futures, with social stigma being a recurring theme.

Article Synopsis
  • Tourette syndrome (TS) and its common comorbidities may lead to a greater likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors, but it’s uncertain if this translates into an overall greater attitude towards risk.
  • A study involving 54 TS individuals and 32 healthy controls examined decision-making under risk and ambiguity, revealing that TS alone did not show specific risk-taking behavior or a connection with medication or tic severity.
  • The presence of comorbidities, particularly obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, affected decision-making, suggesting that factors other than TS itself may contribute to risky behavior in real-life situations.

Biobased waterborne latexes were synthesized by miniemulsion radical copolymerization of a biosourced β-myrcene (My) terpenic monomer and styrene (S). Biobased amphiphilic copolymers were designed to act as stabilizers of the initial monomer droplets and the polymer colloids dispersed in the water phase. Two types of hydrophilic polymer backbones were hydrophobically modified by terpene molecules to synthesize two series of amphiphilic copolymers with various degrees of substitution.

Development of carbon neutral and sustainable energy sources should be considered as a top priority solution for the growing worldwide energy demand. Photovoltaics are a strong candidate, more specifically, organic photovoltaics (OPV), enabling the design of flexible, lightweight, semitransparent, and low-cost solar cells. However, the active layer of OPV is, for now, mainly deposited from chlorinated solvents, harmful for the environment and for human health.

Article Synopsis
  • Intermittent explosive outbursts (IEO) are common in patients with Tourette disorder (TD) and are seen as highly disruptive, but their underlying neural mechanisms are not well understood.
  • In a study of 55 TD patients, it was found that 47% exhibited IEO, often linked with ADHD, and notable structural changes in specific brain regions were identified in those with IEO.
  • The findings suggest that TD patients with IEO have impaired brain function affecting action control and emotional regulation, leading to increased impulsivity and aggression.

The present study aims in the understanding of the effect of oligo(ethylene glycol)-based biocompatible microgels inner structure on the encapsulation/release mechanisms of different types of cosmetic active molecules. For that, multi-responsive microgels were synthesized using three types of cross-linkers: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), oligo(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (OEGDA) and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). The inner morphology of the microgels synthesized was studied by H-nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques and no effect of cross-linker type on microgel microstructure was observed in the case of analysing purified microgel dispersions.

A new asymmetric organocatalyzed intramolecular aza-Michael reaction by means of both a chiral auxiliary and a catalyst for stereocontrol is reported for the synthesis of optically active isoindolinones. A selected cinchoninium salt was used as phase-transfer catalyst in combination with a chiral nucleophile, a Michael acceptor and a base to provide 3-substituted isoindolinones in good yields and diastereomeric excesses. This methodology was applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a new pazinaclone analogue which is of interest in the field of benzodiazepine-receptor agonists.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a complex developmental neuropsychiatric condition in which motor manifestations are often accompanied by comorbid conditions that impact the patient's quality of life. In the DSM-5, TS belongs to the "neurodevelopmental disorders" group, together with other neurodevelopmental conditions, frequently co-occurring. In this study, we searched the PubMed database using a combination of keywords associating TS and all neurodevelopmental diagnoses.

In the last 10 years, asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation (AF4) has been one of the most promising approaches to characterize colloidal particles. Nevertheless, despite its potentialities, it is still considered a complex technique to set up, and the theory is difficult to apply for the characterization of complex samples containing submicron particles and nanoparticles. In the present work, we developed and propose a simple analytical strategy to rapidly determine the presence of several submicron populations in an unknown sample with one programmed AF4 method.

Objective: This study aimed at exploring the psychosocial and clinical correlates of substance use disorder in an adolescent inpatient psychiatric population.

Method: During the period from 2006-2007, all subjects were systematically screened for substance use disorder (SUD) and were assessed for SUD characteristics by an independent support team using the RECAP (Joint Report on Drug Addiction and Treatment). Each SUD case was matched for age, gender, unit, and admission week, so as to compare a consumer sample (cases) with a non-consumer sample (controls).

Background: The existence of bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) during adolescence is now clearly established whereas there are still some controversies on BD-II and BD-NOS diagnosis, mainly in Europe (O'Dowd in Br Med J 29, 2006). Little is known on the phenomenology and potential short-term prognosis factors of bipolar episodes in this age population. In particular, very few studies examine this issue on inpatients in the European context of free access to care.
