[Prevention of prematurity's complications].

Prematurity remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates and children. Prevention of preterm birth and of its complications is a major public health issue. From before conception to long term follow up, many health actors are engaged in this preventive strategy with the same goal : to give the best quality of life for these vulnerable young patients.

The Buccal Fat Pad for Closure of Oroantral Communication.

The buccal fat pad (BFP) is a well-established tool in oral and maxillofacial surgery and its use has proved of value for the closure of oroantral communications. Oroantral communication may be a common complication after sequestrectomy in "bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws."The authors report a clinical case of a 70-year-old female patient in bisphosphonate therapy presented with right maxillary sinusitis and oroantral communication after implants insertion.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign lesion of unclear etiology involving the synovial membranes of joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths. Its occurrence in the temporomandibular joint is particularly rare. Despite its benign nature, pigmented villonodular synovitis is described as being locally destructive to the surrounding structures.

Peripheral ameloblastoma: case report.

Ameloblastoma is a benign tumour of the odontogenic tissues which may be aggressive in the involved area with a high rate of recurrence if not adequately removed, and represents 1% of all tumours of the mouth, generally appearing in the bones of the jaw. Although it is fairly rare, tumours with such histopathology have been described in the soft tissue and are named peripheral or extraosseus ameloblastoma. Potential cells of origin are ondontogenic residue of the dental lamina, pluripotent cells in the basal layer of the epithelial mucosa, and pluripotent cells of the minor salivary glands.

Acoustic characteristics of ultrasonic coded transmitters for fishery applications: could marine mammals hear them?

Ultrasonic coded transmitters (UCTs) producing frequencies of 69-83 kHz are used increasingly to track fish and invertebrates in coastal and estuarine waters. To address concerns that they might be audible to marine mammals, acoustic properties of UCTs were measured off Mission Beach, San Diego, and at the U.S.

Early surgical treatment in unilateral coronoid hyperplasia and facial asymmetry.

Unilateral coronoid hyperplasia is a rare condition in the pediatric age. It may be an unrecognized cause of restricted mouth opening in children.The limited jaw movement is due to the enlargement of the coronoid process of the mandible that impinges on the zygomatic arch during mouth opening.

Anterior skull base fractures: guidelines for treatment.

Cranial base fractures still represent a challenging issue. A multidisciplinary approach and the contribution of different specialists is mandatory. There is still a controversy regarding the correct approach to these trauma due to the diversity of opinions as well as surgical approaches and timing.

Structural fat grafting in complex reconstructive surgery.

The use of adipous tissue transfer for the correction of maxillo-facial defects was reported for the first time at the end of the 19 century and has been the subject of numerous studies. Grafted fat tissue has been used for years as an excellent filler during facial enhancement and recontouring. Several techniques have been proposed for harvesting and grafting the fat.

Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint.

Synovial chondromatosis is a cartilaginous metaplasia of the mesenchymal remnants of the synovial tissue of the joints. Its main characteristic is the formation of cartilaginous nodules in the synovium and inside the articular space (loose bodies). Synovial chondromatosis mainly affects big synovial joints such as the elbow and knee and is uncommon in the temporomandibular joint.

[Analysis of the genetic variability of complement component C4 by real-time PCR].

Recent findings revealed that the repetitions of long DNA sequences comprising the sequence of different genes (CNV - copy-number variations) are very common in the human genome. A well-known example for this type of variations is the "RCCX-module" that implies the tandem duplication of four genes - RP, 21-hydroxylase, complement component C4 and tenascin X - in a haplotype block. Only the C4 gene is active in each module, besides, each module may contain C4A or C4B gene encoding the two isoforms of complement C4.

Pre-irradiation chemotherapy for newly diagnosed high grade astrocytoma.

The purpose of this work was to determine the response rate and toxicity of a combination of Carmustine and Cisplatin administered before radiation in patients with newly diagnosed high grade astrocytoma. A good response rate has been published with this association in primary cerebral high grade tumor. This protocol was administered in a homogeneous population of 37 adult patients with measurable tumor on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or CT scan.

The MAM (meprin/A5-protein/PTPmu) domain is a homophilic binding site promoting the lateral dimerization of receptor-like protein-tyrosine phosphatase mu.

The MAM (meprin/A5-protein/PTPmu) domain is present in numerous proteins with diverse functions. PTPmu belongs to the MAM-containing subclass of protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTP) able to promote cell-to-cell adhesion. Here we provide experimental evidence that the MAM domain is a homophilic binding site of PTPmu.

Progredient subclinical changes of the behaviour.

The author describes serious subclinical deviations of behaviour in longevity (80-90 years) in connection with 36 cases of a homogenous group of aged persons. In 4 cases she observed normal behaviour, in 13 cases the syndrome of loss of prestige, in 7 cases milder anomalies of the behaviour, in 12 cases grave deviations. The matter of the present article is to review the graver subclinical anomalies.
