Interactions between marine diatoms and bacteria have been studied for decades. However, the visualization of physical interactions between these diatoms and their colonizers is still limited. To enhance our understanding of these specific interactions, a new Thalassiosira rotula isolate from the North Sea (strain 8673) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) after staining with fluorescently labeled lectins targeting specific glycoconjugates.

In this research communication we describe the DGAT1 sequence and promoter region in dairy cows and buffalo and compare the activities of DGAT1 between the two species in order to increase knowledge of the cause of milk fat variation. pGL-3 basic vectors were used to construct the reporter gene. Based on the predicted promoter region, 4 truncated plasmid vectors were constructed in cow-DGAT1 and 3 plasmid vectors in buffalo-DGAT1.

We have measured the intermolecular dissociation energies of supersonically cooled 1-naphthol (1NpOH) complexes with solvents S = furan, thiophene, 2,5-dimethylfuran, and tetrahydrofuran. The naphthol OH forms non-classical H-bonds with the aromatic -electrons of furan, thiophene, and 2,5-dimethylfuran and a classical H-bond with the tetrahydrofuran O atom. p-Dioxane is non-polar, hence its rotational constants cannot be determined by microwave rotational coherence spectroscopy (RCS). We perform high-resolution gas-phase rotational spectroscopy of para-dioxane-h and -d using femtosecond time-resolved Raman RCS in a gas cell at T = 293 K and in a pulsed supersonic jet at T∼130 K. The inertial tensor of p-dioxane-h is strongly asymmetric, leading to a large number of asymmetry transients in its RCS spectrum.

Femtosecond Raman rotational coherence spectroscopy (RCS) detected by degenerate four-wave mixing is a background-free method that allows to determine accurate gas-phase rotational constants of non-polar molecules. Raman RCS has so far mostly been applied to the regular coherence patterns of symmetric-top molecules, while its application to nonpolar asymmetric tops has been hampered by the large number of RCS transient types, the resulting variability of the RCS patterns, and the 10(3)-10(4) times larger computational effort to simulate and fit rotational Raman RCS transients. We present the rotational Raman RCS spectra of the nonpolar asymmetric top 1,4-difluorobenzene (para-difluorobenzene, p-DFB) measured in a pulsed Ar supersonic jet and in a gas cell over delay times up to ∼2.

The gas-phase rotational motion of hexafluorobenzene has been measured in real time using femtosecond (fs) time-resolved rotational Raman coherence spectroscopy (RR-RCS) at T = 100 and 295 K. This four-wave mixing method allows to probe the rotation of non-polar gas-phase molecules with fs time resolution over times up to ∼5 ns. The ground state rotational constant of hexafluorobenzene is determined as B0 = 1029.

We have developed a sparse phase-stepping (SPS) method for x-ray Talbot-Lau interferometry, which first constructs a SPS intensity pattern of fewer images than the conventional phase-stepping (PS) method and then fills the data gap with neighboring pixels for phase retrieval. The SPS method is highly beneficial in practice since the fundamental difference in spatial resolution between the SPS and PS methods becomes negligible due to the blur caused by an interferometer. The concept of the SPS method has been proved by the experiment using a small effective source size.

We demonstrate a single shot two-dimensional grating-based X-ray phase-contrast imaging using a synchrotron radiation source. A checkerboard designed phase grating for π phase modulation at 17 keV and 35 keV, and a lattice-shaped amplitude grating with a high aspect ratio to shield X-rays up to 35 keV were fabricated. A Fourier analysis of Moiré fringe generated by the gratings was introduced to obtain the two-dimensional differential phase-contrast image with a single exposure.

A study was conducted on 58 patients who underwent surgery for small cell lung cancer (SCLC) as resection or exploratory thoracotomy, and 43 patients encountered during the same period who received no surgical treatment. The following conclusions were drawn from our analysis: At stage I, an operation is desirable, regardless of the subtype of SCLC, but chemotherapy should be given first; at stages II and III, by the addition of surgery after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, "state-of-the-art" results for limited SCLC can be surpassed; in patients with stage II disease on whom curative resection has been performed, particular attention must be paid to the possibility of metastasis to the brain; and finally, exploratory thoracotomy did not bring about the early death of patients or reduce the quality of life, but only delayed chemotherapy for about one week, while enabling the staging and histological subtype of SCLC to be clarified.

The use of untreated night soil as a fertilizer in agriculture or as a source of nutrients in fish farming presents a considerable health hazard in the form of pathogens and parasites. A pilot study is reported in which night soil was placed in an anaerobic digester, producing biogas and residual organic matter. The latter was introduced into biostabilization ponds, and nutrients were thus obtained for the rearing of fish.

Protein kinase C (PKC) activity and DNA synthesis were measured in human fetal bone marrow fibroblasts following treatment with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) (500 U/ml) or conditioned media containing natural cell proliferation inhibitor (CM-NCPI). Treatment with TNF alpha led to growth stimulation (120 +/- 7% of control in 24 h, 141 +/- 6% in 72 h). At the same time particulate PKC activity diminished, reaching 55 +/- 8% of control in 24 h and remaining at this level at 72 h.

Upon treatment with the phorbol ester, tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (PMA), peripheral mononuclear blood cells from patients with acute myeloid leukemia secrete into serum-free cell-conditioned media (PMA-CCM) at least three distinct nondialysable 'hematopoietic' factors: granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), granulocyte/macrophage-colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and erythroid differentiation factor (EDF, activin A). G-CSF was identified by its stimulation of [3H]thymidine incorporation into a G-CSF-responsive cell line, NSF-60, and the inhibition of its stimulation by a G-CSF-specific monoclonal antibody (MAB). GM-CSF was identified by its stimulation of [3H]thymidine incorporation into a GM-CSF-responsive line, TALL-101, and the inhibition of its stimulation by a GM-CSF-specific MAB.

Human fetal bone marrow (FBM) cells were examined for the ability to form colonies in the absence of exogenous colony-stimulating factor (CSF) in double layer agar, methylcellulose (MC), and in agar-MC (agar underlayer, MC overlayer) culture systems. Two cell types isolated and purified to homogeneity from human decidua obtained at 8-17 weeks of gestation were shown immunocytochemically to correspond to decidual and epithelial cells in the tissue of origin. The decidual cells reacted with antihuman PRL antiserum, and epithelial cells reacted with antiserum against keratin, an epithelial cell marker.
