A retrospective analysis in the period 2007 to 2011 included 71 surgically treated patients for carcinoma of the head and neck region and subsequent reconstruction with 36 pedicled distant flaps and 47 free flaps. Patient specific parameters of data collection with SPSS 17.0 were age and sex distribution, TNM stage and treatment.

Transsexualism is a gender identity disorder in which there is a strong and ongoing desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex. In male-to-female transsexuals with strong masculine facial features facial feminization surgery can be performed as part of gender reassignment. The male forehead has extensive supraorbital bossing, and above this there is often a flat area before the convex curvature of the upper forehead begins.

Samples retrospectively collected from 99 patients with primary OSCC were analyzed with regard to tumor node metastasis stage, grading, and 5-year survival time and summarized at an SPSS 11.0 databank.

Objective: Mini- and micro-screws are of increasing interest in orthodontic therapy in cases where maximum anchorage is requested. In this study we aimed to identify the criteria that influence the clinical success of micro-implants.
Material And Methods: 239 micro-implants were inserted for skeletal anchorage in 85 patients undergoing orthodontic therapy.

The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the potential of calcium phosphate cement in the treatment of orbital wall defect fractures in an adult sheep model, and to compare this alloplastic material to autologous calvaria split-bone grafts. Clinical, volumetric and histological examinations were carried out of both reconstruction materials. The use of cement made intraoperative corrections easier to perform, and increased the precision of reconstruction of the orbital volume.

Aim of this study was to determine the success of implants that were inserted in patients with cleft of the lip, alveolus and palate (CLAP) and to identify prognosis-relevant factors. In a prospective evaluation, 75 implants inserted in combination with bone grafting at cleft sites of 45 patients were examined. The observation period extended 5.

Objectives: The transfer of the osseofasciocutaneus fibula-free flap has become a routine procedure in the reconstruction of comprehensive orofacial defects. Besides its length, major advantages of the fibula-free flap include the trigonal diameter of the fibular bone, which usually allows the placement of dental implants.
Patients And Methods: In a prospective study, 16 consecutive patients who received free fibula grafts and in total 51 dental implants between 1999 and 2001 were examined.

Bifocal transport osteogenesis (BTO) is a promising technique for the reconstruction of extended osseous craniofacial defects. Aim of this study was to determine the potential of this technique related to various donor sites of the transport segment. In 10 adult sheep critical size defects of the calvaria were treated by gradual movement of a transport segment consisting either of autogenous regional free calvarial bone grafts (n=5) or autogenous illiac free bone grafts (n=5).

The aim of this study was to determine the regenerative potential of this technique related to the degree of mobilization of the transport segment. In 10 adult sheep, critically sized defects of the calvaria were treated by gradual movement of a transport segment consisting of calvarial bone.

These changes could not be detected in other cephalometric cleft studies because posterior vertical maxillary height and vertical mandibular ramus length were not measured simultaneously. This study presents a modified digital lateral cephalometric hard and soft tissue analysis (Onyx Ceph software, version 2.

A total of 125 German-speaking cleft patients (74 male and 51 female) were included in this study: 18 patients with isolated unilateral cleft lip (UCL; mean age: 13.00 +/- 2.

It may be caused either by organic deficits, functional disorders, or both. NasalView is known as an instrument for the objective assessment of nasalance in cases of velopharyngeal insufficiency or incompetence.

Background: Following the clinical introduction of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy in the 1980s for the treatment of sialolithiasis of salivary glands this method has been widely used and replaced surgical interventions in selected patients.
Patients: Between 1/1995 and 1/1999 35 patients were treated by extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) with the "Minilith SL-1" lithotripter on an outpatient basis. Radiography and sonography were performed to verify sialolithiasis and scintigraphic investigation was done to control sufficient gland function.

In this study the literature dealing with experimental cranio-facial distraction osteogenesis (DO) was reviewed. A PUBMED search (National Library of Medicine [NCBI] revised 1 April 2001) from 1966 through December 2000 was conducted. Key words used in the search were: distraction, lengthening, mandible, mandibular, maxilla, maxillary, midface, midfacial, monobloc, cranial, cranio-facial, maxillofacial.

The purpose of this study was to compare cranio-facial, particularly midfacial morphology, in two groups of children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) treated at two different cleft centres (Hannover. Germany and Brussels, Belgium) following different surgical treatment protocols. A total of 62 children (40 males; 22 females) with non-syndromic UCLP were included in this study at approximately the age of 10.

Background: The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system is an important regulator of cell growth and differentiation. The mitogenic and metabolic activities of IGFs are modulated by a family of six high-affinity IFG binding proteins (IGFBPs). IGFBP-6 is unique among the IGFBPs in its preferential binding of IGF II.

Injury can result on the one hand by direct intrusion of the instrument through the apex into the mandibular canal, and on the other by the filling material which becomes forced into the mandibular canal. In the latter case, a nerve lesion will only result when the filling material contains neurotoxic substances such as paraformaldehyde.

Children with craniofacial malformations are at special risk for the development of peripheral airway obstruction. The problems are magnified in patients with retroposition or hypoplasia of the mandible. In these cases, the base of the tongue is posteriorly displaced, hereby decreasing the airway diameter.
