Post-transfusion purpura (PTP) is a rare disorder characterized by severe thrombocytopenia developing after a blood component transfusion. Ninety percent of the reported cases are women. In this article, we present a case of PTP in a male patient who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting and discuss its management.

Five-year follow-up of a patient with bilateral carotid body tumors after unilateral surgical resection.

Background: Carotid body tumors are rare, highly vascularized neoplasms that arise from the paraganglia located at the carotid bifurcation. Surgery is the only curative treatment. However, treatment of bilateral carotid body tumors represents a special challenge due to potential neurovascular complications.

Background: The purpose of the present study was to compare the results of various types of anchor applications with or without augmentation in both osteopenic and severely osteoporotic bone models.

Methods: Two different types of suture anchors were tested in severely osteoporotic (SOP) and osteopenic polyurethane (PU) foam blocks using an established protocol. An Instron machine applied static loading parallel to the axis of insertion until failure, and the mean anchor failure strengths were calculated.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a systemic chronic inflammatory disease. Cardiac involvement as pericarditis, myocarditis and valvular disease is common in JIA. This study aims to assess left ventricular (LV) diastolic functions with tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and to compare it with conventional Doppler echocardiography (pulse wave Doppler (PWD)) techniques in patients with active JIA.

DHEAS for the prediction of subclinical Cushing's syndrome: perplexing or advantageous?

The diagnostic accuracy of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) to predict subclinical Cushing's syndrome (sCS) has been a matter of debate. The primary objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic power of DHEAS in predicting sCS. This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary referral center and based on subjects referred between 2004 and 2014.

Microorganisms in respiratory tract of patients diagnosed with atypical pneumonia: results of a research based on the use of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) DNA microarray method and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Background: Numerous molecular-based tests were applied for the laboratory-based diagnosis of viruses. In this cross-sectional case control study, in addition to bacteria, we aimed to determine respiratory viruses using, for the first time in our country, the Reverse Transcription PCR DNA Microarray method, and we also aimed to evaluate its diagnostic performance.

Methods: Respiratory viruses were investigated from nasopharyngeal swabs of 76 patients diagnosed with atypical pneumonia and 64 healthy controls using the CLART Pneumovir (Genomica, Spain) kit and from 10 mL blood samples of the same subjects.

Circadian blood pressure rhythm in normotensive offspring of hypertensive parents.

Background: The aim of this study was to explore the circadian blood pressure (BP) rhythm using ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) in normotensive children with a family history of essential hypertension.

Methods: Group 1 consisted of children with hypertensive mothers and/or fathers (n = 20), Group 2 consisted of children with hypertensive grandparents (n = 20), and Group 3 consisted of children with normotensive parents (n = 20). All participating children underwent a 24-h ABPM and echocardiography.

Ketamine is toxic to chondrocyte cell cultures.

Ketamine has been used in combination with a variety of other agents for intra-articular analgesia, with promising results. However, although it has been shown to be toxic to various types of cell, there is no available information on the effects of ketamine on chondrocytes. We conducted a prospective randomised controlled study to evaluate the effects of ketamine on cultured chondrocytes isolated from rat articular cartilage.

Fragmented QRS in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease with a variety of clinical features. Cardiac involvement is present in more than half of the patients with SLE. Fragmentation of QRS (fQRS) is presumed marker of cardiovascular risk and has not been previously evaluated in SLE.

We describe a community-acquired pneumonia case in a 44-year-old female due to E. cancerogenus.

Bloodstream infection with Oligella ureolytica in a newborn infant: a case report and review of the literature.

Effect of oral tamoxifen on the healing of corrosive oesophageal burns in an experimental rat model.

Scar tissue can develop during the recovery period, and as a result, serious narrowing of the oesophagus can develop, in turn causing morbidity and mortality. Attachment Characteristics and Behavioral Problems in Children and Adolescents with Congenital Blindness.

Topical infliximab for the suppression of wound healing following experimental glaucoma filtration surgery.

Background: The purpose of this work was to look into the effects of infliximab on wound healing in experimental glaucoma filtration surgery and to compare the antifibrotic effects of this agent to that of mitomycin-C (MMC).

Methods: Twenty-eight male New Zealand White rabbits were randomly assigned to four groups, each including seven rabbits: control group, sham group, MMC group, and infliximab group. The rabbits in the control group were not operated on and did not receive any treatment.

Objective: Research findings debate about features of broad autism phenotype. In this study, we tested whether parents of children with autism have problems recognizing emotional facial expression and the contribution of such an impairment to the broad phenotype of autism.

Method: Seventy-two parents of children with autistic spectrum disorder and 38 parents of control group participated in the study.

Effect of low-level laser on guided tissue regeneration performed with equine bone and membrane in the treatment of intrabony defects: a clinical study.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical results of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) after the application of equine bone and membrane alone or combined with low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for the treatment of periodontal defects.

Materials And Methods: This study was an intra-individual longitudinal study of 6 months' duration conducted using a split-mouth and randomized design. In 13 periodontitis patients with bilateral intrabony periodontal defects, while one defect site was treated with GTR plus LLLT (1064 nm, 100 mW, with energy density of 4 J/cm(2)), the contralateral defect site was treated with guided GTR alone.

Palosuran treatment effective as bosentan in the treatment model of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and fatal disorder that any valuable advance in the management of diseases has crucial importance. The present study aimed to compare the Endothelin1 (ET1) inhibitor bosentan which is regarded as standard therapy with different dose regimens of palosuran which is urotensin-II (UII) inhibitor and explore the discrepancy for mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP), UII, ET1 levels, and pulmonary vascular pathology. Seventy rats were randomly divided into seven groups of ten animals each: group 1 (control group) received the vehicle subcutaneously, instead of monocrotaline (MCT) and vehicle; group 2 (MCT group) received subcutaneous MCT and vehicle; and group 3 (MCT + palosuran 30 mg) received subcutaneous MCT and palosuran.
