Marker-assisted mapping enables forward genetic analysis in Aedes aegypti, an arboviral vector with vast recombination deserts.

Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses that cause dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika. Although recent success in reverse genetics has facilitated rapid progress in basic and applied research, integration of forward genetics with modern technologies remains challenging in this important species, as up to 47% of its chromosome is refractory to genetic mapping due to extremely low rate of recombination. Here, we report the development of a marker-assisted mapping strategy to readily screen for and genotype only the rare but informative recombinants, drastically increasing both the resolution and signal-to-noise ratio.

Using a Community Engagement Approach to Enhance Contraception Awareness in Rural Western North Carolina.

Unintended pregnancy rates remain higher than the national average in North Carolina. Although long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) use has reduced rates of unintended pregnancy, this contraceptive method is widely underused, often due to low community awareness. Boot Camp Translation is a community engagement process that promotes community awareness of evidence-based medical recommendations by designing culturally meaningful messages.

The arylhydrocarbon receptor (AhR), but not the AhR-nuclear translocator (ARNT), is increased in hearts of patients with cardiomyopathy.

The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of the arylhydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and its partner AhR-nuclear translocator (ARNT) in left ventricle specimens from explanted hearts from patients with cardiomyopathy (CMP). Explanted hearts from 16 patients with ischemic (n=9, age 63+/-12 years) and dilative (n=7, age 54+/-12 years) CMP, undergoing heart transplantation were examined. Healthy donor hearts from five accident victims served as controls.

Trisomy 13 is associated with poor prognosis in idiopathic myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia.

We report a case of idiopathic myelofibrosis with trisomy 13 as the sole clonal aberration, as demonstrated by metaphase cytogenetics. The clinical course was especially poor in this case, with death in blast crisis occurring within two weeks from diagnosis. The dismal outcome bears striking similarity to two previous cases of idiopathic myelofibrosis and trisomy 13 reported in the literature.

Physical and sexual abuse. A middle-class concern?

This study evaluated the prevalence of physical and/or sexual abuse in a population of employed, middle-class women who all have access to health care. Questionnaires were given to all patients who came to the ambulatory gynecology clinic at Wilford Hall Medical Center from October 19, 1992, to November 13, 1992. Questions were asked to ascertain the number of women who had experienced at least one episode of forced sexual contact or physical abuse.

Thrombolysis combined with angioplasty for failed femorodistal arterial grafts.

This study examines the long-term clinical success and complications of thrombolysis-angioplasty (TLA) of failed arterial grafts performed in 17 patients (group 1) and matched with 21 patients (groups 2) who had intra-arterial thrombolysis (IAT) followed by graft revision. TLA consists of alternating thrombolysis with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in the treatment of occlusive arterial disease. Failed grafts consisted of 21 vein grafts, 6 ovine collagen grafts, 6 polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) prostheses, 3 human umbilical veins and 2 polyurethane vascular grafts.

Evaluation of the significance of the estradiol response during the clomiphene citrate challenge test.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the E2 response during the clomiphene citrate (CC) challenge test and ovarian responsiveness to exogenous gonadotropins.

Design: Performance of a CC challenge test followed by ovulation induction with exogenous gonadotropins as part of participation in an assisted reproduction program.

Setting: Assisted reproduction program in a large military tertiary care center.

Use of the RapID-ANA System to screen for enzyme activities that differ among species of bile-inhibited Bacteroides.

The RapID-ANA System (Innovative Diagnostics Systems, Inc., Atlanta, Ga.) was used to test 102 strains of 14 species of phenotypically similar bile-inhibited Bacteroides from humans.

Iron-57 chemical shifts in carbonyl myoglobin and its model complexes determined by iron-57-carbon-13 double resonance.

The 57Fe chemical shift of sperm whale carbonyl myoglobin and two model complexes have been determined by double resonance methods in doubly enriched [57Fe, 13C] samples. Deprotonation of the axial imidazole in the model complex causes a large upfield 57Fe chemical shift, consistent with the increased ligand field strength. The 57Fe signal for MbCO is to low field of that of the neutral imidazole complex, arguing against significant hydrogen-bonding of its imidazole but supporting a slight axial strain.

Effect of Monensin on Growth and Methanogenesis of Methanobacterium formicicum.

Monensin inhibited methanogenesis from formate but not from H(2)-CO(2) by resting-cell suspensions of Methanobacterium formicicum. The antibiotic severely inhibited growth on formate. The lag phase of H(2)-CO(2)-grown cultures was prolonged by monensin, but these cultures recovered from the initial inhibition.

Positive monospot tests preceding the diagnosis of acute monocytic leukemia in two adolescents.

The early detection and treatment of two cases of acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL) was hampered by the presence of positive slide tests for infectious mononucleosis (IM). This assumes great importance with the recent development of specific therapy, effective for certain subtypes of nonlymphocytic leukemia.

Comparison of anaphylactic reactions to asparaginase derived from Escherichia coli and from Erwinia cultures.

A retrospective study was undertaken comparing the frequency and severity of anaphylactic reactions to E. coli-derived and Erwinia-derived asparaginase given intravenously on a weekly dosage schedule. Both drugs were found to produce life-threatening hypersensivity reactions with the chance of reaction per dose administered being almost identical--8% for each dose administered.
