A phase I and II clinical trial of intraperitoneally administered liposome-encapsulated doxorubicin in patients with advanced ovarian cancer is being evaluated. Doxyrubicin liposomes were prepared with cardiolipin, phosphatidyl choline, cholesterol, and sterarylamine and sized by flow cytometry before administration. Fifteen patients have been treated with 42 cycles of intraperitoneal liposome-encapsulated doxrubicin.

A 38-year-old man with progressive psychiatric disturbances, dysarthria, myoclonus, rigidity and terminal generalized seizures died 4 years after onset. At post-mortem, severe leucodystrophy of the centrum semi-ovale, corpus callosum and internal capsule was found. In the demyelinated areas, abundant mononuclear phagocytes were found filled with dark yellow or brown pigment granules, staining with PAS and Sudan black, autofluorescent in paraffin sections, and orthochromatic with toluidine blue in paraffin and frozen sections and positive with Fontana's silver method.

While several different human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been associated with cancer of the cervix, it is yet to be determined if specific HPV types have clinical or prognostic significance. To address this question, 30 cases of invasive carcinoma (squamous carcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma) with HPV DNA sequences detectable in the tissue were analyzed. HPV type was determined by Southern blot DNA hybridization.

The case report describes a situation that required staging laparotomy for ovarian cancer but the patient refused vertical incision for cosmetic reasons. The technique employed a low transverse skin incision with development of a skin flap and horizontal transection of the midabdominal wall near the level of the umbilicus. Operative exposure was adequate for standard staging procedures and the cosmetic requirements of the patient were satisfied.

A 21 year old male, well-nourished and non-alcoholic, died after five weeks illness. He had suffered epileptic fits, bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, bulbar and pontine paralysis, tetraparesia, ataxia and dystonia. A CT brain scan showed low density lesions of the striatum bilaterally.

The role of restaging laparotomy in the treatment of ovarian carcinoma is currently being reevaluated. This study was initiated to examine the predictive value of a negative outcome. Between November 1974 and October 1983, sixty-three patients with no clinical evidence of disease underwent 70 restaging laparotomies for ovarian carcinoma.

The effects of sustained, high blood alcohol levels (216 +/- 120 mg/100 ml, S.D.) for 30 days on cholecystokinin (CCK)-mediated pancreatic exocrine function were studied in a rat model that achieves both maximally controlled, optimal nutrition and high alcohol intake (approximately 40.

From July 1974 to December 1984, 24 skinning vulvectomies (17 partial and seven total) were performed in 24 patients with carcinoma in situ of the vulva. The objective for partial skinning vulvectomy was preservation of the cosmetic and functional integrity of the vulva in younger and sexually active patients in whom a steady increase in the incidence of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia has been observed in the last decade. Two groups selected for partial skinning vulvectomy with skin graft were patients with multicentric vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia with colposcopic evidence of normal skin, and patients with localized but a wide surface area of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia such that poor cosmetic results would be unavoidable should excision be approximated with primary skin closure.

The clinical features, differential diagnosis and treatment of unilateral spasms of the jaw and masticatory muscles are discussed and illustrated by eight cases of unilateral jaw spasms of various aetiologies. These include focal dystonia of the jaw, hemimasticatory spasm with and without facial hemiatrophy, paroxysmal events in multiple sclerosis and tetany. Attention is particularly drawn to four cases of unilateral dystonia of the jaw which has not been described before.

Survival in 115 women with cervical carcinoma and 55 patients with carcinoma of the endometrium was correlated with the status of paraaortic lymph nodes and the clinical stage of disease. The survival probability at 48 months for patients with cervical cancer who had negative paraaortic lymph nodes was 86% for stage IB in comparison to 67% for those with advanced disease (clinical stages II, III, and IV). The difference of 19% between these two groups was not statistically significant nor was there a statistical difference in survival between early and advanced disease groups when paraaortic nodes contained tumor (37 vs 20%).

Tissue from 13 cervical cancers and pelvic or para-aortic lymph nodes from the same patient were evaluated by deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization with a human papillomavirus type 16 deoxyribonucleic acid probe for the presence of human papillomavirus-related deoxyribonucleic acid sequences. Twelve of the primary malignancies were squamous cancers and one was an adenocarcinoma. Eight of the primary tumors contained human papillomavirus type 16 deoxyribonucleic acid sequences, and five contained viral sequences closely related to human papillomavirus type 16.

Plasma levels of amylase, lipase, and immunoreactive cationic trypsinogen (ICT) were monitored in conscious rats to study the effects of cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) plus secretin administration, cephalic stimuli, and food intake. Stepwise increasing doses of CCK-8 (1, 5, 15, 30 Ivy dog units: IDU/kg/h) caused significant dose-related increases in plasma levels of each enzyme in a similar manner as those previously observed for response patterns of CCK-induced exocrine protein secretion in the same species. ICT showed the greatest response to CCK-8 with a maximal concentration 30 times above basal levels resulting in the steepest slope of the dose-response curve.

A clinical and pathological report of a patient who died 15 days after suffering a classic heat stroke is presented. The clinical picture was of a flaccid quadriplegia with anhidrosis and sphincter disturbance. The most severe pathological lesions were to be seen in the anterior and intermedio-lateral horns of the spinal cord.

Two different radioactive microspheres (141Ce and 46Sc) were used to measure blood flow to an area of the large intestine in dogs before and after a surgical resection was performed with surgical staples. The healing of an anastomosis is theoretically related to the blood flow to the anastomotic site. Blood flow studies were conducted in three dogs using this technique.

Asexual blood-stage antigens from Plasmodium falciparum related to the development of protective immunity in an endemic area were identified by statistical comparison of antigens recognized by adult immune sera with those recognized by non-immune subjects (children). After metabolic labelling of parasites in culture and immunoprecipitation, target antigens of seric antibodies were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis/SDS and detected by fluorography. Two groups of antigens were thus identified: 1) the major bands, recognized by more than 90% of the sera regardless of the patients' immune status; and 2) the minor bands, less intense on fluorograms.
