Unresectable thoracic neuroblastic tumors: Changes in image-defined risk factors after chemotherapy and impact on surgical management.

Purpose: Neuroblastoma management in children is multimodal and depends on multiple factors, including the possibility of complete surgical resection. Image-defined risk factors (IDRFs) are used to assess the feasibility of primary surgery. We studied the changes in IDRFs after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for thoracic neurogenic tumors.

A novel approach in the intraoperative management of ovotesticular DSD.

Ovotesticular disorder of sex development (OTD) management remains challenging. In OTD, cautious gonadal evaluation and separation of ovarian and testicular components might be required to avoid virilization of a patient with female identity. Herein we report our minimal invasive approach in this very rare condition.

Antibiotic therapy in pediatric acute appendicitis: Compliance with local protocol to reduce antibiotic overuse.

Purpose: Acute appendicitis is one of the commonest surgical emergencies in pediatrics. Treatment usually consists of a combination of surgery and antibiotics. The present study was designed to assess compliance with our local antibiotic protocol and analyse the consequences of non-compliance.

Transient pseudohypoaldosteronism: a potentially severe condition affecting infants with urinary tract malformation.

Background: Secondary pseudohypoaldosteronism (S-PHA) is a life-threatening condition affecting young children with urinary tract malformation (UTM).

Objective: The aim of the study was to highlight the diagnosis of S-PHA in children with UTM and propose appropriate management.

Study Design: The authors retrospectively reviewed cases of S-PHA related to UTM observed at the institution and searched the PubMed® database to review the literature.

Is contralateral inguinal exploration necessary in preterm girls undergoing inguinal hernia repair during the first months of life?

Background: To assess the need for contralateral surgical exploration in preterm girls with symptomatic unilateral inguinal hernia.

Methods: The medical data of girls operated for inguinal hernia between 2004 and 2016 in a single pediatric surgery center were retrospectively collected. Preterm girls operated for unilateral hernia before 6 months of life were selected (55/517 cases) to assess the incidence and risk factors for contralateral metachronous inguinal hernia (CMIH).

[Congenital mesenteric band simulating a small-bowel volvulus in a mesenteric rotation anomaly].

A congenital mesenteric band is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. We describe a case of upper gastrointestinal obstruction on a jejunal congenital band in a 2-year-old child. The challenge is to make the diagnosis in a patient with no history of previous surgery.

Management of nonparasitic splenic cysts in children: A French multicenter review of 100 cases.

Background: The management of nonparasitic splenic cysts (NPSC) remains controversial. Surgical resection is indicated for symptomatic or complicated forms, but no guidelines are available for asymptomatic NPSC. The aims of this study were to evaluate the management of NPSC in French hospitals and to analyze the results of management.

A novel approach to evaluating the benefit of post-urinary tract infection renal ultrasonography, using decision curve analysis.

Background: The benefit of post-urinary tract infection (UTI) sonography to detect clinically significant renal abnormalities remains a subject open to debate. Decision curve analysis (DCA) is a novel method for evaluating the clinical usefulness of diagnostic tests. Our objective was to determine, using DCA, the benefit of post-UTI sonography and of post-UTI sonography with biological markers of inflammation to predict the risk of recurrence of febrile UTI in children aged 2 to 24 months without known uropathy.

[Complete resolution of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the bladder after antibiotic therapy].

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are rare benign tumors, most commonly arising in the lungs and urinary bladder. Many etiologic factors are suspected in their development, but none have been formally demonstrated. Conventional treatment for bladder IMT is complete surgical resection by partial cystectomy or transurethral resection.
