Brazil and Argentina are two of the South American countries that perform the highest number of solid organ transplant procedures globally each year. These procedures are not exempt from risks for the recipient, and there is a risk of donor-derived infections. Risk mitigation measures for disease transmission from donor to recipient are essential, and biovigilance systems play a crucial role to inform authorities and provide data for the definition of screening procedures and prevention of donor-derived infections.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Buenos Aires, Argentina, found a 4.2% prevalence of Hepatitis D virus (HDV) among hepatitis B virus-reactive patients, with many of these cases being nonreactive to standard anti-HDV antibodies.
  • The research involved analyzing 189 serum samples, revealing that most HDV RNA cases were undetected by typical diagnostic methods, suggesting a need for improved testing.
  • The findings highlight the importance of synchronous testing for better diagnosis of HDV and call for further studies to target high-risk populations and enhance prevention strategies for co-infections.

Background And Aim: Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) encompasses long-lasting symptoms in individuals with COVID-19 and is estimated to affect between 31-67% of patients, with women being more commonly affected. No definitive biomarkers have emerged in the acute stage that can help predict the onset of PCC, therefore we aimed at describing sex-disaggregated data of PCC patients from a local cohort and explore potential acute predictors of PCC and neurologic PCC.

Methods: A local cohort of consecutive patients admitted with COVID-19 diagnosis between June 2020 and July 2021 were registered, and clinical and laboratory data were recorded.

Background High-income country studies show unfavorable trends in stroke incidence (SI) in younger populations. We aimed to estimate temporal change in SI disaggregated by age and sex in Latin America and the Caribbean region. Methods and Results A search strategy was used in MEDLINE, WOS, and LILACS databases from 1997 to 2021, including prospective population-based observational studies with first-ever stroke incidence in Latin America.

Background: Stroke is a major global cause of death and disability. Most strokes occur in populations of low-middle-income country (LMIC); therefore, the subsequent disease burden is greater than in populations of high-income countries. Few epidemiological data exist for stroke in Latin America, composed primarily of LMIC.

Background And Purpose: Telemedicine for stroke patients' care (telestroke [TS]) has grown notably in recent decades and may offer advantages during health crisis. Hospital admissions related to stroke have decreased globally during the COVID-19 pandemic, but scarce information is available regarding the effect of COVID-19 in TS. Using a population-based TS registry, we investigated the impact of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout our TS network in Santiago, Chile.

Argentina exhibits low serological prevalence for Hepatitis B virus (HBV); however, occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) has been reported in blood donors, Amerindians and individuals coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), and/or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic diversity of HBV and to evaluate serological marker associations and coinfections with HCV and HIV in patients attending and treated in a public hospital in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A total of 189 HBV reactive samples (HBsAg and/or anti-HBc) were analyzed for HBV DNA characterization.

This study aimed to verify the feasibility of a video-based preoperative educational intervention plus one-to-one, nurse-led reinforcement discussion in patients undergoing elective major surgery and to assess the impact of this combined intervention on patient- and nurse-perceived patient knowledge, self-efficacy, and resilience. Patients received written material at pre-admission and were offered the intervention at admission. Patients reported their knowledge and self-efficacy at pre-admission and after the intervention, and resilience at pre-admission and discharge.

Human T-lymphotropic virus 1/2 (HTLV-1/2), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis D virus (HDV) share transmission routes. Argentina shows low prevalence of HTLV-1/2, HBV, and HDV infections; however, this situation may vary according to the geographic region and group studied. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of HBV and HDV infections and detect both viral genotypes in HTLV-1/2 individuals from Argentina.

One of the lines of research on organic devices is focused on their miniaturization to obtain denser and faster electronic circuits. The challenge is to build devices adding atom by atom or molecule by molecule until the desired structures are achieved. To do this job, techniques able to see and manipulate matter at this scale are needed.

In association with hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a subviral agent that may promote severe acute and chronic forms of liver disease. Based on the percentage of nucleotide identity of the genome, HDV was initially classified into three genotypes. However, since 2006, the original classification has been further expanded into eight clades/genotypes.

Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas comprehend a group of lymphoproliferative disorders characterized by being monoclonal proliferations of B-cell primarily involving the skin. Despite being recognized as autonomous and distinct clinico-pathologic entities since the late 80s, their classification is still an ongoing matter of debate. At the moment, WHO classification recognizes three disorders: primary cutaneous marginal zone lymphoma, primary cutaneous follicle center lymphoma and primary cutaneous diffuse large b-cell lymphoma (leg type).

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Treponema pallidum, Trypanosoma cruzi and Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) in five Amerindian populations of Argentina. A retrospective study was conducted among 857 Amerindian populations (112 Kollas, 298 Mbyá-guaraníes, 79 Sagua Huarpes, 368 Wichis) from 2007 to 2010. Screening and confirmation of T.

The term "Primary Cutaneous B-Cell Lymphoma" (PCBCL) comprehends a variety of lymphoproliferative disorders characterized by a clonal proliferation of B-cells primarily involving the skin. The absence of evident extra-cutaneous disease must be confirmed after six-month follow-up in order to exclude a nodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with secondary cutaneous involvement, which may have a completely different clinical behavior and prognosis. In this article, we have summarized the clinico-pathological features of main types of PCBCL and we outline the guidelines for management based on a review of the available literature.

Tumor- or cancer-associated fibroblasts (TAFs or CAFs) are active players in tumorigenesis and exhibit distinct angiogenic and tumorigenic properties. Adrenomedullin (AM), a multifunctional peptide plays an important role in angiogenesis and tumor growth through its receptors calcitonin receptor-like receptor/receptor activity modifying protein-2 and -3 (CLR/RAMP2 and CLR/RAMP3). We show that AM and AM receptors mRNAs are highly expressed in CAFs prepared from invasive breast carcinoma when compared to normal fibroblasts.

Objective: Conversational entrainment, the natural tendency for people to modify their behaviors to more closely match their communication partner, is examined as one possible mechanism modulating the prevalence of vocal fry in the speech of young American women engaged in spoken dialogue.

Method: Twenty young adult female American English speakers engaged in two spoken dialogue tasks-one with a young adult female American English conversational partner who exhibited substantial vocal fry and one with a young adult female American English conversational partner who exhibited quantifiably less vocal fry. Dialogues were analyzed for proportion of vocal fry, by speaker, and two measures of communicative success (efficiency and enjoyment).

Angiogenesis is one of the key features of glioblastoma (GB). However, the use of anti-angiogenic therapies directed against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is limited by primary or acquired resistance. MET/HGF and PlGF signaling are involved in potential alternative escape mechanisms to VEGF pathway.
