Background: German health policy has propagated an expansion of outpatient surgeries and procedures and initiated the discussion about this. Otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery offers opportunities to provide currently inpatient procedures on an outpatient basis.
Methods: The German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and the German Professional Association of Otorhinolaryngologists established working groups to assess and evaluate the ENT-specific aspects of shifting services to the outpatient setting.

The treatment of patients with severe hearing loss or deafness with a cochlear implant (CI) represents a standard in Germany today. However, there is hardly any data on the current number of clinical CI centers (CI clinics) and their geographical distribution. The patient self-help organization, German Cochlear Implant Society (DCIG), and the German Society for Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC) have therefore initiated a survey to determine the regional distribution, the range of services, the consideration of existing quality standards and cooperation with patient self-help organizations of the individual clinical CI centers.

Study Design: This is a prospective, multicenter clinical study. We investigated whether autofluorescent endoscopy using the Lung Imaging Fluorescent Endoscopy (LIFE)-Lung System (Xillix, Olympus) is capable of identifying early cancer of the larynx, especially in comparison with conventional white-light endoscopy and microscopic laryngoscopy.
Due to an increase in the numbers of function-preserving laryngectomies and the utilization of laser techniques in cancer surgery, more patients after supraglottic partial laryngectomies are experiencing dysphagia of different intensities. We therefore developed a functional therapy program that we use for patients after supraglottic partial laryngectomies following a special diagnostic evaluation including video-laryngoscopy and, if necessary, high-speed cine-radiography. This therapeutic treatment was developed from conventional treatment for patients with dysphagia caused by neurological disorders and includes body posture, altered mouth movements, food consistency and swallowing technique.

This study was initiated to investigate cysteinyl-LT formation by tissue slices from intracranial tumors in comparison with cyclooxygenase products such as prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha and thromboxane (TX) B2. Tissue slices from meningiomas and astrocytomas were found to release large amounts of cysteinyl-LT spontaneously and even higher amounts after ionophore A 23187 stimulation, which could not be accounted for by blood possibly remaining in the tissue slices.

Using sensitive radioimmunoassay techniques, the formation of cysteinyl-leukotrienes (LT) and prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha was investigated in human brain tissue slices in vitro. Under basal conditions spontaneous release of considerable amounts of LTC4-like material and PGF2 alpha could be detected from slices of both human grey and white matter. Ionophore A23187 stimulated the release of large amounts of LTC4-like material while leaving unaffected the formation of the cyclo-oxygenase product PGF2 alpha.
