Ovarian cancer is a deadly gynecological disease with frequent recurrence. Current treatments for patients include platinum-based therapy regimens with PARP inhibitors specific for HR-deficient high-grade serous ovarian cancers (HGSOCs). Despite initial effectiveness, patients inevitably develop disease progression as tumor cells acquire resistance.

Background: The immune system may play an important role in the aetiology of psychotic disorders and there is increasing interest in the relationship between immune markers and clinical outcomes in psychosis. The present study investigated whether subclinical systemic inflammation was associated with length of stay in individuals with psychosis admitted to a psychiatric hospital. We tested the hypothesis that a higher level of subclinical systemic inflammation, as measured by the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) would be associated with a longer period in hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • Findings indicate that higher cumulative HIV viral load (VL) and lower CD4 cell counts are significantly linked to an increased risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) in people living with HIV (PWH).
  • A study involving over 21,000 PWH over nearly five years revealed that those with higher cumulative VL had a 45% increased risk of VTE compared to those with lower VL. Additionally, a CD4 count below 100 cells/mm³ was associated with a fourfold increase in risk.
  • The research suggests that managing HIV viral load and maintaining CD4 levels could be crucial strategies to lower the risk of VTE in PWH.

Arterial stiffness measured by total pulse wave velocity (T-PWV) is associated with an increased risk of multiple age-related diseases. T-PWV can be described by structural (S-PWV) and load-dependent (LD-PWV) arterial stiffening. T-cells have been implicated in arterial remodeling, arterial stiffness, and hypertension in humans and animals; however, it is unknown whether T-cells are risk factors for T-PWV or its components.

Background: Data obtained from the National Hockey League (NHL) have shown that a risk prediction model, including both visible signs and mechanisms of injury, improves the identification of possible concussion. However, only about half of concussions diagnosed by club medical staff in the NHL exhibit visible signs. At present, the NHL concussion spotter protocol does not include central league spotters' subjective judgments of the severity of forces associated with a direct hit to the head (perceived force severity [PFS]) or whether players brace before a hit (bracing).

Substance use is associated with decreased antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among people with HIV (PWH). Adherence plays a significant role in mediating the negative effects of substance use on HIV suppression and is a principal modifiable patient-level factor in improving HIV suppression and reducing ART drug resistance. Understanding substance use and ART adherence, particularly with rapidly changing substance use epidemiology and ART regimens, is vital to improving HIV care.

Background: Frailty occurs at higher rates and younger ages among people with HIV (PWH) compared with the general population and is often attributed to chronic inflammation and subsequent immune exhaustion. We assessed how inflammatory biomarkers are associated with frailty among PWH.

Methods: The Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) cohort is comprised of adult PWH in care at 10 sites, and harmonizes demographic, clinical, and patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data.

  • Monkeypox (mpox) has become more common and serious for people with HIV since 2022, with researchers looking into why some get sick and how others can protect themselves.
  • From a study of nearly 20,000 people living with HIV, 413 cases of mpox were found, with specific groups being more at risk, like younger people and those not on treatment for HIV.
  • The monkeypox vaccine was shown to be very effective, especially for people with a healthy immune system, but a lot of Black individuals with HIV were not getting vaccinated as often as others.

Argonaute (AGO), a component of RNA-induced silencing complexes (RISCs), is a representative RNA-binding protein (RBP) known to bind with mature microRNAs (miRNAs) and is directly involved in post-transcriptional gene silencing. However, despite the biological significance of miRNAs, the roles of other miRNA-binding proteins (miRBPs) remain unclear in the regulation of miRNA loading, dissociation from RISCs and extracellular release. In this study, we performed protein arrays to profile miRBPs and identify 118 RBPs that directly bind to miRNAs.

Unlabelled: Genetically engineered mouse models (GEMM) have fundamentally changed how ovarian cancer etiology, early detection, and treatment are understood. MYC, an oncogene, is amongst the most amplified genes in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), but it has not previously been utilized to drive HGSOC GEMMs. We coupled Myc and dominant-negative mutant p53-R270H with a fallopian tube epithelium (FTE)-specific promoter Ovgp1 to generate a new GEMM of HGSOC.

Background: Hyperspectral imaging techniques have emerged as powerful tools for non-invasive investigation of artworks. This paper employs either reflectance imaging spectroscopy (RIS) or macroscopic X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) imaging in combination with macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) for state-of-the-art chemical imaging of painted cultural heritage artefacts. While RIS can provide molecular information and MA-XRF can offer elemental distribution maps of paintings of high lateral resolution, the unique advantage of MA-XRPD lies in its ability to visualize the distributions of specific pigments and estimate in a quantitative manner the relative concentrations of the crystalline phases at the surface of artworks.
