The correlates of blood pressure (BP) were investigated in 2 samples using common protocols, one from a Union of Soviet Socialist Republics study in 2 locations and one from a United States of America study in 9 locations. Age, heart rate, Quetelet index, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, natural logarithm of triglycerides and fasting glucose were positively related to systolic BP in both samples. In diastolic BP, alcohol consumption, heart rate, Quetelet index and natural logarithm of triglycerides were positively associated, and number of cigarettes smoked was negatively related in both samples.

The effect of the attachment of long tail fibers on the structure of proteins of the bacteriophage T4 baseplate was studied by digital processing of electron microscopic images. The attachment of the long fibers was found to result in dramatical changes of the proteins of the baseplate plag, while the wedges, to which the long fibers are attached, undergo only slight changes. We studied the baseplates with one to six attached fibers and found that the attachment of one fiber resulted in the change of the entire baseplate, although the wedge located in the vicinity of the fiber attachment changed to a greater extent.

The authors used the procedure of a step-wise discriminant analysis for comparing the informative value of different methods for revealing heterozygotic carriers of the gene of Duchenne's myodystrophy by means of an analysis of the blood serum and physicochemical properties of erythrocytes in 11 mothers suffering from Duchenne's muscular dystrophy who were obligate (by the findings of a genealogical analysis) carriers of the gene of Duchenne's myodystrophy. Employment of a complex of four methods (determination of the constant of the rate of chloride-bicarbonate metabolism through the erythrocyte membrane, erythrocytic deformability, hemolytic stability of erythrocytes upon their heating at 55 degrees C, and analysis of the activity of serum creatine kinase) has increased 1.8-fold the rate of detecting heterozygotic carriers of the gene of Duchenne's myodystrophy as compared to the creatine kinase test.

Early alterations relating to lenticular opacity occurred long before large protein aggregates formation in the lens and in plasma membranes of lens fibres. At the first step of human cataract development membranes contained typical knobs, sockets and fragments. Then, with development of cataract, further fragmentation and undulation of lens membranes were observed; surface of the fibre membranes was increased.

Erythrocyte filterability and its relation to erythrocyte volume, hemoglobin level and cholesterol/phospholipid ratio were studied in anginal patients. A 25% decrease in filterability and elevated erythrocyte cholesterol/phospholipid ratios were found in anginal patients, as compared to normal subjects. A close inverse correlation (r = -0.

Liposome suspension prepared from the unsaturated phospholipids exposed to lipid peroxidation (LPO) induced posterior subcapsular cataracts after injection into the posterior vitreous of rabbit eyes. In the background of this model lies a type of lens opacity formed during retinal degeneration when toxic peroxide substances diffuse anteriorly through the vitreous body resulting in vitreous opacities and complicated cataracts. Saturated liposomes (prepared from beta-oleoyl-gamma-palmitoyl) L-alpha-lecithin) did not induce lens opacities, which is the evidence that a lipid peroxidation mechanism may be responsible for the posterior cataracts.

The level of lipid peroxidation products (LPP) was determined in the aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of patients with cataract and donor eyes. The content of LPP in senile cataract aqueous humor was shown to be significantly increased. To determine the possible mechanism of LPP increase in aqueous humor, human lenses at different stages of cataract as well as transparent human and rabbit lenses were incubated for 3 hours in 3.

Pupils of Moscow schools with normal and elevated arterial pressure were followed up over a period of 8 years. The study confirmed the existence of the "tracking" phenomenon in blood pressure. When identifying groups of children requiring constant medical control, it is necessary to take into account both the initial level of arterial pressure and the body mass, arterial pressure values at repeated measurement, and the family history.

A comparison is made of two epidemiological studies conducted within an eight-year interval on randomly selected independent samples of male population aged 40-59 years in one of the municipal districts of Moscow. In the years 1975-1977, 3908 men (response rate 77.7%) were examined, in 1983-1984 1662 men (response rate 72.
