Background: Significant differences between individual responses to emotional stimuli can be important for the study of emotion. We investigated whether incorporating individual ratings of emotional arousal in the analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data improves the detection of activation in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and sublenticular extended amygdala (SLEA), areas implicated in the processing of emotional salience.
Methods: Healthy subjects viewed counterbalanced blocks of aversive, nonaversive, and blank images.
Individual growth factors can regulate multiple aspects of behavior within a single cell during differentiation, with each signaling pathway controlled independently and also responsive to other receptors such as cell surface integrins. The mechanisms by which this is achieved remain poorly understood. Here we use myelin-forming oligodendrocytes and their precursors to examine the role of lipid rafts, cholesterol and sphingolipid-rich microdomains of the cell membrane implicated in cell signaling.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFUsing the model of lysolecithin-induced demyelination of the corpus callosum in wild-type, NCAM-deficient, and endoneuraminidase-injected mice, we have analyzed the consequences of the loss of expression of NCAM or PSA residues on the migration and proliferation capacities of neural precursors of the subventricular zone (SVZ). We showed that the absence of PSA or NCAM delayed migration of neural precursors to the olfactory bulb and consequently enhanced their recruitment at the lesion site. Moreover, after demyelination, the lack of NCAM but not PSA promoted proliferation in the SVZ and the lesion while the lack of PSA favored the differentiation of the traced cells into the oligodendroglial fate both in the SVZ and in the lesion.

Also reported in experimental models of demyelination, this phenomenom confirms the regenerating potential of the demyelinated central nervous system (CNS) and, in particular, the existence of an endogenous mechanism of oligodendrocyte renewal. Failure in efficient remyelination could result from exhaustion of the pool of remyelinating cells, loss of axons and absence of a permissive environment for remyelination.

Recently a virus, Kaposi sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), bearing these sequences has been identified in a cell line derived from a body cavity-based lymphoma. In this report, we show that the same sequences are present in KS biopsies as DNA molecules of a form and size characteristic of latent herpesviruses-large, covalently closed, circular episomes.
