Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how Matrix Support (MS) affects integration between Primary Health Care (PHC) and Dental Specialty Centers (CEOs) in Brazil.
  • Findings reveal that nearly half of the CEOs lack collaborative therapeutic projects with PHC oral health teams, which is linked to various factors like poor case discussions and absence of joint educational activities.
  • The conclusion emphasizes that individual practices within CEOs play a more significant role in the integration issues than broader contextual factors from local municipalities.

Forensic autopsy is an important tool for the proper management of non-natural deaths in minors. However, it seems that autopsy in minors is a practice which may not be performed routinely. In this framework, we conducted a study analyzing autopsies of minors (under 18 years of age in Italy) performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Milan in the period 2001-2019.

Article Synopsis
  • Timely diagnosis of oral cancers is essential, and the study focuses on understanding factors affecting waiting times for oral biopsies in Brazil.
  • The research utilized secondary data to analyze the scheduling of biopsies and identified that 51.8% of dental specialty centers had non-immediate waiting times.
  • The study concluded that longer waiting times are linked to coverage provided by dental centers, particularly those serving only one municipality, while other contextual factors were not significant.

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals at risk for adverse COVID-19 outcomes were offered telephone triage and consultations by General Practitioners (GPs) during the first wave of the epidemic, with a focus on education and prevention rather than clinical interventions.
  • A total of 127,292 patients aged 70 and older, with comorbidities, were assigned to GPs for these consultations, which included discussing risks and preventive measures against COVID-19.
  • Results showed that contacted patients exhibited higher vaccination rates and greater access to therapies, whereas non-contacted patients faced higher risks of COVID-19 infection and related hospitalizations.

Background: the influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses share a common respiratory symptomatology and transmission mode. COVID-19 and influenza R0 overlapped in the first epidemic wave. In autumn 2021-winter 2022, the influenza epidemic had a delayed onset compared to pre-COVID-19 years and lower incidence rates than in the pre-pandemic period.

We assessed parental reflective functioning (PRF) with the Parent Development Interview-Revised and investigated its association with parenting behaviors, that is, autonomy support and psychological control (operationalized in terms of behaviors promoting and undermining autonomy relatedness), and stress responses (cortisol reactivity) during a parent-child conflict interaction task (Family Interaction Task). Participants were 40 mothers and 28 fathers, who took part in the study together with their adolescent children ( = 49). Mothers had significantly lower PRF and displayed more psychologically controlling behaviors in the interaction with their children than fathers.

Background: Brazil experienced an expansion of the population's access to oral health policies after the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS, Sistema Único de Saúde). Through public policies, the consolidation of Primary Health Care (PHC) and the incorporation of dental care into primary and hospital care took place. The objective of this study was to identify epidemiological aspects, including the temporal trend, of hospital morbidity from oral and oropharyngeal cancer in Brazil, considering hospitalizations for this neoplasm in a hospital network linked to the public care system.

The use of automated systems in identification and susceptibility tests can improve antimicrobial therapy, and positively impact clinical outcomes with a decrease in antimicrobial resistance, hospitalization time, costs, and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical impact of an automated method for identification and susceptibility testing of microbial isolates. This was a retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to analyse the results before and after the implementation period of a VITEK 2 system in a Brazilian university hospital.

Background: the levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after the second vaccine dose decline in the following months; the administration of an additional vaccine dose (booster) is able to restore the immune system in the short period significantly reducing the risk of a severe disease. In the winter of 2021, a new particularly infectious variant caused the urgent need to increase the coverage of the booster dose.

Objectives: to present, using real data, an evaluation of the efficacy of the booster dose in reducing the severe disease of SARS-CoV-2 infection in terms of hospital admissions, intensive care and death from all causes.

Background: Integrated dental services within the Health System, particularly at primary health care, are crucial to reverse the current impact of oral diseases, which are among the most prevalent diseases worldwide. However, the use of dental services is determined by complex phenomena related to the individual, the environment and practices in which care is offered. Therefore, factors associated with dental appointments scheduling can affect positively or negatively the use of dental services.

Article Synopsis
  • Chikungunya fever, transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, significantly affects patients' quality of life, with unclear oral manifestations that the study aims to clarify.
  • A systematic review analyzed 27 studies, highlighting various oral issues like ulcers, gingival bleeding, and changes in taste which primarily cause discomfort during chewing.
  • The findings suggest that these oral symptoms are more common in women and older adults, typically easing within 3 to 10 days, and are linked to viral infections and an inflammatory response.

(1) Background: Several studies have reported associations between maternal diet in terms of single foods or nutrients and human milk compounds, while the overall role of maternal diet and related dietary patterns has rarely been investigated. (2) Methods: Between 2012 and 2014, we enrolled 300 healthy Italian mothers, who exclusively breastfed their infant. During a hospital visit at 6 weeks postpartum, a sample of freshly expressed foremilk was collected and information on maternal dietary habits in the postpartum period was obtained through an interviewer-administered food frequency questionnaire.

Background: Evidence from COVID-19 outbreak shows that individuals with specific chronic diseases are at higher risk of severe prognosis after infection. Public health authorities are developing vaccination programmes with priorities that minimize the risk of mortality and severe events in individuals and communities. We propose an evidence-based strategy that targets the frailest subjects whose timely vaccination is likely to minimize future deaths and preserve the resilience of the health service by preventing infections.

Objective: In Italy, the first diagnosis of COVID-19 was confirmed on 20 February 2020 in the Lombardy region. Given the rapid spread of the infection in the population, it was suggested that in Europe, and specifically in Italy, the virus had already been present in the last months of 2019. In this paper, we aim to evaluate the hypothesis on the early presence of the virus in Italy by analysing data on trends of access to emergency departments (EDs) of subjects with a diagnosis of pneumonia during the 2015-2020 period.
