In the present study, the effect of hypothermia on liver damage was investigated in a porcine long term model of multi-system injury, consisting of blunt chest trauma, penetrating abdominal trauma, musculoskeletal injury, and hemorrhagic shockMETHODS: In 30 pigs, a standardized polytrauma including blunt chest trauma, penetrating abdominal trauma, musculoskeletal injury, and hemorrhagic shock of 45% of total blood volume was induced. Methods: We present important elements of the initial in-hospital care of severely injured patients on the basis of pertinent publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed and the current German S3 guideline on the care of severely and multiply traumatized patients, which was last updated in 2016.

While a number of risk factors that predict a poor clinical course have been identified, the influence of pre-existing radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip is unclear.
Methods: The influence of pre-existing radiographic OA of the hip on short- to mid-term functional outcome was prospectively analysed in a cohort of patients undergoing proximal femoral nailing for trochanteric fracture.
Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the independent factors influencing mobilization progress after geriatric hip fractures.
Patients And Methods: 392 Hip fracture patients older than 60 years were included in this prospective, observational, cohort study. The progress of mobilization was measured with walking ability 4 days post-surgery, ability to climb stairs until discharge and the Tinetti test at discharge.
Purpose: Caring for severely injured trauma patients is challenging for all medical professionals involved both in the preclinical and in the clinical course of treatment. While the overall quality of care in Germany is high there still are significant regional differences remaining. Reasons are geographical and infrastructural differences as well as variations in personnel and equipment of the hospitals.
