Do measurement timing, heating modality and biological sex modulate the acute effect of heat exposure on brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation and postocclusion reactive hyperaemia? What is the main finding and its importance? The acute effect of heat exposure on brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation and postocclusion reactive hyperaemia is: (1) transient and short lasting; (2) different between forearm and whole-body heating; (3) unaffected by forearm heating during whole-body heating; and (4) not different but not always equivalent between males and females. These findings provide a useful basis for future studies to investigate the acute effect of heat exposure on vascular function.

It is generally accepted that older adults display an impaired cardiovascular response to heat stress, and it has been suggested that this impaired response contributes to their increased risk of mortality during extreme heat events. Seminal studies have shown that cutaneous vasodilation, the redistribution of blood flow from visceral organs, and the increase in cardiac output are blunted in older adults during passive heating. The blunted rise of cardiac output was initially attributed to an inability to maintain stroke volume, suggesting that cardiac systolic and/or diastolic function does not adequately respond to the constraints of heat stress in older adults.

The cellular protein SERINC5 inhibits the infectivity of diverse retroviruses, and its activity is counteracted by the glycosylated Gag (glycoGag) protein of murine leukemia virus (MLV), the S2 protein of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), and the Nef protein of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Determining the regions within SERINC5 that provide restrictive activity or Nef sensitivity should inform mechanistic models of the SERINC5/HIV-1 relationship. Here, we report that deletion of the conserved sequence EDTEE, which is located within a cytoplasmic loop of SERINC5 and which is reminiscent of an acidic-cluster membrane trafficking signal, increases the sensitivity of SERINC5 to antagonism by Nef, while it has no effect on the intrinsic activity of the protein as an inhibitor of infectivity.

Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy is a rare but benign vasculitis occurring in infants aged from 4 to 24 months. Skin lesions can take various forms, including extensive hemorrhagic purpura, and can therefore be mistaken for purpura fulminans if associated with fever, which leads to initiating broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment. In the present case, we describe a 7-month-old boy with acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy and rapidly extensive purpura lesions that led to intravenous cefotaxime and amikacin treatment.
