Various types of health professional volunteers from high-income nations are increasingly engaged in short-term global health projects in low- and middle-income countries. The goal of global health projects is to improve health for all people and address health inequities. Short-term projects lasting days to months can create challenges for volunteers and hosts.

Two cases of abnormal liver function associated with H1N1 infection in pregnancy.

Two patients with recent H1N1 virus infection in pregnancy were found to have raised transaminases. They have both had a mild illness and have recovered with no adverse effects, and one has delivered a healthy baby while the other is still pregnant. We suggest that the deranged transaminase concentrations were directly linked to the viral infection in the first patient as the abnormal blood results predated treatment.

The effect of vigorous exercise during pregnancy.

Pregnant women without medical or obstetric problems should be encouraged to exercise. The paucity of experimental data on exercise in pregnancy forces recommendations to be drawn from a synthesis of available information. Vigorous exercise during pregnancy seems to pose no adverse maternal or neonatal outcomes.

Nutritional counseling for vegetarians during pregnancy and lactation.

A woman's nutritional status directly affects pregnancy outcome and the quality of breast milk after birth. Clinicians who provide prenatal care have an important role in assessing the nutritional status of women and directing them to appropriate resources while respecting their choices. Vegetarian and vegan diets may present with unique nutrient deficiencies that can be addressed during prenatal nutritional counseling.

Helicobacter pylori and severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterial infection of the stomach, which may aggravate nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Studies have found conflicting evidence of the role of H. pylori in severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum.
