NP and PA Privileging in Acute Care Settings: Do Scope of Practice Laws Matter?

As hospitals' interest in nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) grows, their leadership is eager to know how their medical staffing privileging policies for these professionals compare to peer hospitals. This study assesses the extent of variation of these policies in four clinical areas and examines whether the differences are associated with state scope of practice laws for NPs and PAs. We also examine the relationship of NP and PA privileging policies to each other.

The Evolution of the New Provider Team: Driving Cultural Change Through Data.

Nursing executives are continually challenged to address a rapidly evolving health care system. Every aspect of care delivery is being scrutinized, yet the constant requirement remains assurance of high-quality, highly reliable care that is cost-effective and easily accessible. The nursing workforce remains visible in traditional roles as well as in new and innovative capacities, whereas nurse executives experience expanded realms of focus and responsibility.

Lessons learned from 10 years of research on a post-baccalaureate nurse residency program.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine outcomes from 10 years of research on a post-baccalaureate new graduate nurse residency program and to report lessons learned.

Background: Transition to practice programs are recommended by the Future of Nursing report, the Carnegie Foundation study, the Joint Commission, and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

Methods: Data from new graduate residents who participated in the University HealthSystem Consortium/American Association of Colleges of Nursing residency from 2002 through 2012 are presented.

Inpatient management of asthma in the Chicago suburbs: the Suburban Asthma Management Initiative (SAMI).

Background: Assessment of inpatient asthma management has generally been limited to urban settings, including Chicago, which is known for its high asthma morbidity and mortality. Previously published data have been based on survey methodology. The Suburban Asthma Consortium (SAC) sought to obtain patient-based data unique to the Chicago suburbs to improve asthma care in those areas.
