Background: Pre-operative weight loss has been consistently associated with increased post-operative morbidity. The study aims to determine if pre-operative oral nutritional supplements (ONSs) with dietary advice reduce post-operative complications.
Methods: Single-blinded randomized controlled trial.
Objective: To investigate the feasibility of a pragmatic lifestyle intervention in patients who had recently completed surgery and chemotherapy for colon cancer and to obtain preliminary data of its impact on important health outcomes.
Design: A prospective, randomized, controlled pilot trial.
Setting: University rehabilitation facility.
Background: Lung transplantation from non-heart-beating donors causes ischemia-reperfusion injury. We sought to determine the trigger for expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Methods: Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats underwent left lung transplant (six groups of 6).
We investigated the effect of fertilisation and multiple episodes of simulated herbivory on the prickliness of bramble, Rubus vestitus. The prickliness of fertilised, uncut plants was significantly greater than that of plants in all other treatments. Our results indicate that prickle production is constrained by resource availability, with brambles allocating resources to growth under intense herbivory.
