Comparison of Nurse Burnout, Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Pandemics are not new, but our global community allows the spread of disease to occur much more rapidly than ever before. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has placed nurses on the frontlines caring for contagious and acutely ill patients. Nurse burnout is not new either; however, these demands have put a strain on nurses, and nurse burnout has been reported as being at high levels.

Systematic Review of Burnout in US Nurses.

Nurses experience high levels of burnout, and this has become a major factor in recruitment and retention of nurses. Several factors have been associated with burnout, but it is not clear which factors are the most significant predictors. Understanding the most prevalent factors that are associated with burnout will allow for the development and implementation of interventions to ameliorate and/or reduce burnout in the nursing workforce.

Parental and Child Anxiety Perioperatively: Relationship, Repercussions, and Recommendations.

Purpose: Elective surgical procedures predictably cause stress and anxiety for children and their parents. This can have a negative effect on the child's short-term and long-term psychological and physiological outcomes. This narrative review examines perioperative child anxiety and existing interventions to reduce child and parent perioperative anxiety.

Faculty Perceptions of Online Teaching Effectiveness and Indicators of Quality.

Online education programs in nursing are increasing rapidly. Faculty need to be competent in their role and possess the skills necessary to positively impact student outcomes. Existing research offers effective teaching strategies for online education; however, there may be some disconnect in the application of these strategies and faculty perceptions of associated outcomes.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Modifications in Sedation: An Update.

One factor that may contribute to an increased risk for airway compromise is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sedation in this population carries an increased risk for hypopnea. Critical care nurses must decide on the amount and type of sedation to administer at the point of care.

This article presents a brief review and summarizes current therapies for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, major depression, and rheumatoid arthritis. One new pharmaceutical agent is highlighted for each of the topics.

Testing computer-based simulation to enhance clinical judgment skills in senior nursing students.

Expert clinical judgment is the culmination of knowledge and experiential learning that includes reflections on immediate problems and past experience. In nursing education, experiential learning is augmented through the use of simulated clinical experiences provided in simulation laboratories. Various simulations have been reported; however, few studies target the effectiveness of experiential learning using a computer-based simulation available to the individual user.
