Study Objective: The 2002 American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) guidelines for the resuscitation of pediatric septic shock suggest that 20 mL/kg of bolus intravenous fluid be given within 5 minutes. Of 3 commonly used, inexpensive methods of fluid delivery, we hypothesized that only use of a manual push-pull system will permit guideline adherence.
Methods: This prospective, interventional study was open to children in the Columbus Children's Hospital Emergency Department who were ordered a 20 mL/kg nonemergent fluid bolus by their treating physician.
Background: Studies in adults, but not in children, have shown a beneficial effect of one dose of steroid on the severity and duration of throat pain in acute pharyngitis. The effectiveness of longer steroid treatment has not been evaluated in children.

Objective: To compare the accuracy of biomarkers for identifying acute chest syndrome (ACS) in patients with sickle cell disease presenting to a pediatric emergency department (ED).
Methods: We conducted a 13-month-long (2002-2003) cohort study with nested case-control in patients with sickle cell disease presenting to the pediatric ED with vaso-occlusive crises or fever in which we compared levels of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2), endothelin-1, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and peripheral white blood cell count (WBC) in cases that were complicated by ACS and in control subjects with uncomplicated illnesses.
