The effect of myofibroblasts and corticosteroid injections in adhesive capsulitis.

Hypothesis: Adhesive capsulitis is a condition that results in restricted glenohumeral motion. Fibroblasts have been implicated in the disease process; however, their role as a contractile element in the development of fibrosis and capsular contracture is not well understood. We hypothesized (1) that myofibroblast prevalence in capsular biopsy specimens from patients with adhesive capsulitis would be increased compared with controls and (2) that patients treated with an intra-articular injection of corticosteroid would have fewer myofibroblasts.

Interscalene block anesthesia at an ambulatory surgery center performing predominantly regional anesthesia: a prospective study of one hundred thirty-three patients undergoing shoulder surgery.

Interscalene block (ISB) of the brachial plexus is frequently used for patients undergoing ambulatory shoulder surgery. We previously reported that the incidence of postoperative complaints (neurapraxia) after an ISB was low (3% at 2 weeks), but objective neurologic assessment was not included in the study. The present study combines subjective findings with both preoperative and postoperative objective sensory and motor assessments after an ISB.

Quantitation of estrogen receptors and relaxin binding in human anterior cruciate ligament fibroblasts.

The significantly higher incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in collegiate women compared with men may result from relative ligament laxity. Differences in estrogen and relaxin activity, similar to that seen in pregnancy, may account for this. We quantified estrogen receptors by flow cytometry and relaxin receptors by radioligand binding assay in human ACL cells and compared the presence of these receptors in males and females.
