Mayaro virus (MAYV), the etiologic agent of Mayaro fever, leads patients to severe myalgia and arthralgia, which can have a major impact on public health in all the countries where the virus circulates. The emergence and dissemination of new viruses have led the scientific community to develop new in vivo models that can help in the fight against new diseases. So far, mice have been the most used animal model in studies with MAYV and have proved to be an adequate model for recapitulating several aspects of the disease observed in humans.

Previous data indicate that the diabetogenic substance streptozotocin might act in nociceptive neurons changing the sensory signal, regardless of hyperglycemia. In the present article the effects of streptozotocin were compared with another diabetogenic drug, alloxan, for diabetes induction in rats. A possible direct effect of these drugs was tested by means of in vivo experiments and in vitro assays using cultured primary nociceptive neurons.

Cumulating data suggests that ion channel alterations in nociceptive neurons might be involved in the development of diabetic painful neuropathy. In the present study we investigated the involvement of ATP-sensitive potassium (K) channels in the acute effect of high glucose solution in vitro and in vivo. High glucose concentrations depolarized cultured nociceptive neurons and depolarization was blocked by the K opener, diazoxide or by insulin.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most aggressive cancers of the oral cavity and an important cause of death worldwide. Currently, there are limited clinical tools aiding clinicians to establish its early diagnosis, and genetic and epigenetic events leading to the pathogenesis of OSCC remain unsolved. The use of carcinogen-induced knocked out mouse models would help to improve its early detection and also determine the role of proteins such as galectin-3 (Gal3) in this process.
