New Findings: What is the central question of this study? This study presents a new model for studying the rapid onset of severe, acute hyperkalaemia in rats with intact kidney function by administering an intragastric KCl load. What is the main finding and its importance? This new model of intragastric KCl load produces a reliable and reproducible model for studying the rapid onset of severe, acute hyperkalaemia in rats with intact kidney function. We report unprecedented rapid changes (30 min) in ECG, blood pressure and various arterial blood analyses with this new model, providing a solid foundation for future experiments in this field.

The nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), a major hindbrain area involved in cardiovascular regulation, receives primary afferent fibers from peripheral baroreceptors and chemoreceptors. Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) is a relatively stable and diffusible reactive oxygen species (ROS), which acting centrally, may affect neural mechanisms. In the present study, we investigated effects of H(2)O(2) alone or combined with the glutamatergic antagonist kynurenate into the NTS on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR).

A previous study showed that lesions of the anteroventral third ventricle region in the forebrain reduced the pressor response to l-glu into the RVLM. In the present study we investigated the effects produced by injections of atropine (cholinergic antagonist) into the lateral ventricle (LV) on the pressor responses produced by l-glu into the RVLM.

In this study we investigated the effects produced by hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) injected alone or combined with the anti-oxidant agent N-acetil-l-cysteine (NAC) or catalase into the fourth brain ventricle (4th V) on mean arterial pressure and heart rate of conscious rats. Moreover the involvement of the autonomic nervous system on the cardiovascular responses to H(2)O(2) into the 4th V was also investigated.

The present study sought to determine the effects of lesions of these neurones on the cardiovascular responses induced by changes in circulating volume. All experiments were performed in male Wistar rats (320-360 g).

Hypertensive responses and sympathetic activation produced by different stimuli are strongly affected by lesions of the preoptic periventricular tissue surrounding the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V region). Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effects of acute (1 day) and chronic (15 days) electrolytic lesions of the AV3V region on the pressor responses produced by injections of the excitatory amino acid L-glutamate into the RVLM of unanesthetized rats.

Although direct cholinergic activation of the salivary glands induces salivation, recent studies have suggested that salivation produced by i.p.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of lesions to the anteroventral third ventricle region on cardiovascular responses to intravenous hypertonic saline (HS) infusion. Male Wistar rats were anesthetized with urethane.

In this study, we investigated the effects of acute (1 day) and chronic (15 days) electrolytic lesions of the preoptic-periventricular tissue surrounding the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V region) on the pressor and bradycardic responses induced by injections of L-glutamate into the NTS or peripheral chemoreceptor activation in unanesthetized rats. Male Holtzman rats with sham or electrolytic AV3V lesions and a stainless steel cannula implanted into the NTS were used.

Mean arterial pressure (MAP), hindlimb, renal and mesenteric blood flow and vascular conductance (HVC, RVC and MVC, respectively) were measured in urethane (1.2 g/kg, i.
