Introduction: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a procedure associated with a decline in pulmonary function. Among the main causes is the presence of the drain that is usually positioned in the intercostal or subxiphoid region.
Objective: To measure the interference of drains positioning on pulmonary function in patients undergoing CABG.
Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare disease with a high mortality rate in its severe forms. It is caused by mutations within the gene encoding the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP), an enzyme responsible for bone mineralization. In 2015, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of asfotase alfa, the first medication showing benefit in the treatment of HPP.

Methods: This retrospective observational study's data were compiled from the CA's medical records with T1DM (n = 78) being followed up at the Pediatric Endocrinology Service of the Federal University of Uberlândia.
Results: The average participants' age was 10.
Pesticides are a complex mixture of chemicals used to protect crops from a number of pests and diseases. They have been considered as potential mutagenic agents. This study aims at evaluation of the mutagenic effect of pesticide exposure to agricultural workers through chromosomal aberrations (CA) and micronucleus (MN) assay in peripheral blood lymphocytes and oral mucosal cells, respectively.

This study comparatively analyzed the morphological characteristics of the male and female reproductive systems of ostariophysan fish species from the upper Das Velhas River in the São Francisco River basin, Brazil. In order to accomplish this, 393 specimens belonging to seven fish species were sampled between April 2010 and June 2015 for histological, ultrastructural, histochemical, and morphometric analyses.

YAP1 is a potential target of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway, which plays an important role in adrenocortical tumors (ACT). The role of YAP1 in adrenocortical tumorigenesis has not been assessed.

PT-31 (3-(2-chloro-6-fluorobenzyl)-imidazolidine-2,4-dione) is an imidazolidine- 2,4-dione analogue of clonidine that displays a dose-dependent analgesic profile and synergism with morphine. This study investigated genotoxic and mutagenic effects of PT-31 in Swiss mice.

Aim: To investigate the effects of the inhibition of the Wnt/beta-catenin in ACC cells.
Unlabelled: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the purpose of evaluating bone mineral density in HIV seropositive and seronegative climacteric women. HIV infection was negatively associated with bone mineral density in the lumbar spine
Purpose: To assess bone mineral density (BMD) and its associated factors in HIV seropositive and seronegative climacteric women
Methods: A cross-sectional study with 537 women (273 HIV seropositive and 264 HIV seronegative) aged between 40 and 60 years old receiving follow-up care at two hospitals in Brazil. A questionnaire on clinical and sociodemographic characteristics was completed.
Biofilm-related infections are considered a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospital environments. Biofilms allow microorganisms to exchange genetic material and to become persistent colonizers and/or multiresistant to antibiotics. Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum (CPS), a commensal bacterium that colonizes skin and mucosal sites has become progressively multiresistant and responsible for severe nosocomial infections.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 178 HIV-negative and 128 HIV-positive women aged 40-60 years. The Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ) was used to collect data.
Objective: Low bone mineral density (BMD) has been found in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients; however, data on associated factors remain unclear, specifically in middle-aged women. This study aims to evaluate factors associated with low BMD in HIV-positive women.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a questionnaire was administered to 206 HIV-positive women aged 40 to 60 years who were receiving outpatient care.
Background: The sonic hedgehog (SHH) pathway plays a key role in rodent adrenal cortex development and is involved in tumorigenesis in several human tissues, but data in human adrenal glands are limited.
Objectives: The objectives of the study were to analyze the involvement of the SHH pathway in human adrenal development and tumorigenesis and the effects of SHH inhibition on an adrenocortical tumor (ACT) cell line.
Patients And Methods: Expression of SHH pathway components was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 51 normal adrenals (33 fetal) and 34 ACTs (23 pediatric) and by quantitative PCR in 81 ACTs (61 pediatric) and 19 controls (10 pediatric).
Background: In a population-based setting, we aimed to measure the incidence trends of ischemic stroke (IS) thrombolysis, thrombolysis times, proportion of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH), 30-day case fatality and functional outcomes. We also compared the 12-month functional status between thrombolyzed and nonthrombolyzed patients.
Methods: Using data from the Joinville Population-Based Stroke Registry, we prospectively ascertained a cohort of all thrombolyses done in Joinville citizens, Southern Brazil, from 2005 to 2011.
Although infection by Corynebacterium diphtheriae is a model of extracellular mucosal pathogenesis, different clones have been also associated with invasive infections such as sepsis, endocarditis, septic arthritis and osteomyelitis. The mechanisms that promote C. diphtheriae infection and haematogenic dissemination need further investigation.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 537 women of 40-60 years of age, 273 of whom were HIV-positive and 264 HIV-negative. The women were interviewed to obtain data on their sociodemographic characteristics and menopausal symptoms.
Corynebacterium striatum is a potentially pathogenic microorganism with the ability to produce outbreaks of nosocomial infections. Here, we document a nosocomial outbreak caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) C. striatum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The aim of the present report was to investigate the nature and involvement of the surface-exposed non-fimbrial 67-72 kDa proteins (67-72p), previously characterized as adhesin/hemagglutinin, in C. diphtheriae internalization by HEp-2 cells.

Objective: To assess knowledge about osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or osteopenia undergoing antiresorptive treatment.
Subjects And Methods: A cross-sectional study was based on a sample of 232 postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis diagnosed by bone density studies and seen at the Menopause Outpatient Clinic at Caism/Unicamp.
Objective: Studies show that adherence to osteoporosis treatment and prevention is low, which could interfere with therapeutic response. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of women to follow a treatment for osteoporosis with different anti-reabsorptives in relation to the prescribed regimen, dose, indications, and mode of ingestion.
Methods: A cross-sectional study that included postmenopausal women all undergoing medicated treatment because of densitometric diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis was carried out by means of the MedTake questionnaire.
Context: Type 1 pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA1), a primary form of mineralocorticoid resistance, is due to inactivating mutations of the NR3C2 gene, coding for the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR).
Objective: The objective of the study was to assess whether different NR3C2 mutations have distinct effects on the pattern of MR-dependent transcriptional regulation of aldosterone-regulated genes.
Design And Methods: Four MR mutations affecting residues in the ligand binding domain, identified in families with PHA1, were tested.
