Child malnutrition is considered to be the key risk factor for illness during adolescence and is responsible for about one-third of child deaths globally. Historically tribal communities have lagged behind the general population in terms of most socioeconomic aspects, and one such aspect is the nutritional status of children. The present study analyzes regional variations in child malnutrition and its association with women's empowerment in the tribal communities of India.

Diarrhoeal diseases caused by the intestinal parasites Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica constitute a major global health burden. Nitroimidazoles are first-line drugs for the treatment of giardiasis and amebiasis, with metronidazole 1 being the most commonly used drug worldwide. However, treatment failures in giardiasis occur in up to 20% of cases and development of resistance to metronidazole is of concern.

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome is a recessively inherited disease caused by a deficiency of fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase with presenting features of congenital ichthyosis, spastic diplegia or tetraplegia, and mental retardation. The basic pathogenic mechanism is deficiency of fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase, which may lead to an accumulation of long-chain fatty alcohols hampering cell membrane integrity, which further disrupts the barrier function of skin and white matter of the brain. MRI of the brain shows diffuse symmetrical white matter hyperintensities on T2-weighted sequences.

Atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted considerable interest because of their unique combination of properties, including photoluminescence, high lubricity, flexibility, and catalytic activity. These unique properties suggest future uses for TMDs in medical applications such as orthodontics, endoscopy, and optogenetics. However, few studies thus far have investigated the biocompatibility of mechanically exfoliated and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown pristine two-dimensional TMDs.

Unlabelled: CS6 is a common colonization factor expressed by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli It is a two-subunit protein consisting of CssA and CssB in an equal stoichiometry, assembled via the chaperone-usher pathway into an afimbrial, oligomeric assembly on the bacterial cell surface. A recent structural study has predicted the involvement of the N- and C-terminal regions of the CS6 subunits in its assembly. Here, we identified the functionally important residues in the N- and C-terminal regions of the CssA and CssB subunits during CS6 assembly by alanine scanning mutagenesis.

The complexation behavior of the carbonyl and phosphoryl ligating groups bearing ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate (EGMP) monomer and its polymer fixed on a graphene oxide (GO) platform was studied to understand the coordination ability of segregated EGMP units and polymer chains toward UO2(2+) and Pu(4+) ions. The cross-linked poly(EGMP) gel and EGMP dissolved in solution have a similar affinity toward these ions. UV-initiator induced polymerization was used to graft poly(EGMP) on the GO platform utilizing a double bond of EGMP covalently fixed on it.

The anti-arthritic gold-containing drug Auranofin is lethal to the protozoan intestinal parasite Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of human amebiasis, in both culture and animal models of the disease. A putative mechanism of Auranofin action proposes that monovalent gold, Au(I), released from the drug, can bind to the redox-active dithiol group of thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Au(I) binding in the active site is expected to prevent electron transfer to the downstream substrate thioredoxin (Trx), thus interfering with redox homeostasis in the parasite.

One of the most critical requirements of the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the interaction of its surface envelope glycoprotein gp120 with the cellular receptor CD4, which initiates virus entry to cells. Therefore, envelope glycoprotein gp120 has been validated as a potential target to develop HIV-1 entry inhibitors. Here we report the evaluation of a novel non-natural amino acid, termed 882376, reported earlier as a precursor of a CD4-mimetic miniprotein, as HIV-1 entry inhibitor.

The widely distributed colonization factor (CF) CS6 of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) has gained importance over the years in terms of its structure and function. CS6 is an afimbrial assembly in contrast to the other ETEC CFs, which are mostly fimbrial. A recent study predicted a linear fibre model for recombinant chimeric CS6 and formation of oligomers in solution.

Earlier we reported the discovery and design of NBD-556 and their analogs which demonstrated their potential as HIV-1 entry inhibitors. However, progress in developing these inhibitors has been stymied by their CD4-agonist properties, an unfavorable trait for use as drug. Here, we demonstrate the successful conversion of a full CD4-agonist (NBD-556) through a partial CD4-agonist (NBD-09027), to a full CD4-antagonist (NBD-11021) by structure-based modification of the critical oxalamide midregion, previously thought to be intolerant of modification.

The correct interplay of interactions between protein, pigment and lipid molecules is highly relevant for our understanding of the association behavior of the light harvesting complex (LHCII) of green plants. To cover the relevant time and length scales in this multicomponent system, a multi-scale simulation ansatz is employed that subsequently uses a classical all atomistic (AA) model to derive a suitable coarse grained (CG) model which can be backmapped into the AA resolution, aiming for a seamless conversion between two scales. Such an approach requires a faithful description of not only the protein and lipid components, but also the interaction functions for the indispensable pigment molecules, chlorophyll b and chlorophyll a (referred to as chl b/chl a).

The room temperature chemiresistive response of n-type ZnO nanowire (ZnO NWs) films modified with different thicknesses of p-type cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) has been studied. With increasing thickness of CoPc (>15 nm), heterojunction films exhibit a transition from n- to p-type conduction due to uniform coating of CoPc on ZnO. The heterojunction films prepared with a 25 nm thick CoPc layer exhibit the highest response (268% at 10 ppm of H2S) and the fastest response (26 s) among all samples.

Esophageal cancer incidence is reported in high frequency in northeast India. The etiology is different from other population at India due to wide variations in dietary habits or nutritional factors, tobacco/betel quid chewing and alcohol habits. Since DNA methylation, histone modification and miRNA-mediated epigenetic processes alter the gene expression, the involvement of these processes might be useful to find out epigenetic markers of esophageal cancer risk in northeast Indian population.

Hsp90 is an essential chaperone responsible for trafficking a vast array of client proteins, which are substrates that Hsp90 regulates in eukaryotic cells under stress conditions. The ATP-binding N-terminal domain of Hsp90 (also known as a GHKL type ATPase domain) can serve as a specific drug target, because sufficient structural diversity in the ATP-binding pocket of Hsp90 allows for ortholog selectivity of Hsp90 inhibitors. The primary objective of this study is to identify inhibitors specific for the ATP-binding domain of Entamoeba histolytica Hsp90 (EhHsp90).

We investigated structural and dynamical properties of nanodiscs comprising dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) lipids and major scaffold protein MSP1Δ(1-22) from human apolipoprotein A-1 using combined all-atom and coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The computational efficiency of the Martini-CG force field enables the spontaneous self-assembly of lipids and scaffold proteins into stable nanodisc structures on time scales up to tens of microseconds. Subsequent all-atom and CG-MD simulations reveal that the lipids in the nanodisc have lower configurational entropy and higher acyl tail order than in a lamellar bilayer phase.

Two major human diseases caused by filariid nematodes are onchocerciasis, or river blindness, and lymphatic filariasis, which can lead to elephantiasis. The drugs ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine (DEC), and albendazole are used in control programs for these diseases, but are mainly effective against the microfilarial stage and have minimal or no effect on adult worms. Adult Onchocerca volvulus and Brugia malayi worms (macrofilariae) can live for up to 15 years, reproducing and allowing the infection to persist in a population.
