Social determinants of lung cancer incidence in Canada: A 13-year prospective study.

Background: The risk of lung cancer has been shown to be inversely related to socioeconomic status (SES). Because the Canadian Cancer Registry does not contain socioeconomic data, the 1991 Canadian Census Cohort was used to study social determinants of lung cancer risk in the general Canadian population.

Data And Methods: This study examines incidence rates of lung cancer and histologic subtypes by educational attainment, income and occupation in a broadly representative sample of Canadians aged 25 or older.

Value-added oil and animal feed production from corn-ethanol stillage using the oleaginous fungus Mucor circinelloides.

This study highlights the potential of oleaginous fungus, Mucor circinelloides in adsorbing/assimilating oil and nutrients in thin stillage (TS), and producing lipid and protein-rich fungal biomass. Fungal cultivation on TS for 2 days in a 6-L airlift bioreactor, resulted in a 92% increase in oil yield from TS, and 20 g/L of fungal biomass (dry) with a lipid content of 46% (g of oil per 100g dry biomass). Reduction in suspended solids and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) in TS were 95% and 89%, respectively.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of low/negative value soy whey (SW) as an alternative, inexpensive fermentation substrate to culture Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis for nisin production. Initially, a microtiter plate assay using a Bioscreen C Microbiology Plate Reader was used for rapid optimization of culture conditions.

The psychosocial and socioeconomic consequences of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE): a community impact study.

The detection of the first indigenous case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada on May 20, 2003, had significant consequences for the livestock industry. As a result, borders were closed by several trade partners, particularly the United States. The outbreak led to direct and indirect economic impacts to the "cattle" industry exceeding $6 billion.

Assessment of the decision support needs of women from HIV endemic countries regarding voluntary HIV testing in Canada.

Objective: To describe the decision support needs of immigrant and refugee women from HIV endemic countries regarding decision-making about voluntary counseling and testing for HIV (VCT) in Canada; and the needs of practitioners who support these women in making this decision, in a culturally appropriate manner.

Methods: Adapted, semi-structured questionnaires, based on the Ottawa Decision Support Framework (ODSF), were used to interview practitioners and patients. Practitioners from diverse backgrounds were purposefully selected from centers providing VCT in Ottawa.
