Background: Acute myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock (AMICS) is a severe complication associated with exceedingly high mortality rates. While mechanical circulatory support (MCS) has emerged as a potential intervention, the evidence base for independent MCS use remains weak. In contrast, systematic reviews of observational studies have revealed significant mortality reduction when a combination of MCS was used: VA-ECMO in conjunction with a left ventricular (LV) unloading device (Impella or IABP).

Article Synopsis
  • Core loss spectroscopies offer detailed insights into redox processes in Li-ion battery cathodes, necessitating precise interpretation of their spectral features, particularly the oxygen K-edge spectra of lithium transition-metal oxides (LiMO).
  • Using density-functional theory (DFT), three exchange-correlation functionals were applied to simulate the spectra, with rSCAN showing a better alignment with experimental data compared to PBE and PBE +, especially for energies near the main edge.
  • The study demonstrates that DFT can effectively link experimental spectroscopic signatures to theoretical models, revealing the impact of structural distortions, chemical composition, and magnetism on the differentiation of materials with similar structures and magnetic states.

Salmon is the most commonly consumed finfish in the United States of America (USA), and the mislabeling of salmon is a widespread problem. Washington State is a global supplier of wild-caught Pacific salmon and local salmon mislabeling results in substantial economic, ecological, and cultural impacts. Previous studies in Washington State identified high levels of mislabeled salmon in both markets and restaurants, resulting in local legislation being passed that requires proper labeling of salmon products, including identifying it as wild-caught or farm-raised.

Discovered in 1822, the haloform reaction is one of the oldest synthetic organic reactions. The haloform reaction enables the synthesis of carboxylic acids, esters or amides from methyl ketones. The reaction proceeds via exhaustive α-halogenation and then substitution by a nucleophile to liberate a haloform.

This study estimated the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of the MF59®-adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine (aTIV) versus standard-dose nonadjuvanted egg-based quadrivalent influenza vaccines (QIVe) for the prevention of influenza-related medical encounters (IRMEs), outpatient IRMEs, and influenza- and pneumonia-related hospitalizations during the 2019-2020 US influenza season among adults ≥65 years of age who had ≥1 high-risk condition. A secondary objective evaluated the rVE of aTIV versus QIVe in preventing these outcomes among older adults with specific high-risk conditions. This retrospective cohort study included US adults ≥65 years of age vaccinated with aTIV or QIVe between August 1, 2019, and January 31, 2020.

Sea otters are extremely positively buoyant and spend most of their time resting at the water surface. It is understood that some of this buoyancy comes from the air layer that sea otters maintain in their pelage, with the lungs providing an additional source of positive buoyancy. Past studies have investigated the fur buoyant force in adult sea otters; however, little is known about the fur buoyant force in younger age classes.
